Applied for the social security card on November 23rd and recieved it on December 8th with no problems at all. Today got our marriage licence application, getting the licence on Monday, then getting my Kansas Indentification card and drivers licence also on Monday since all that was needed for them was the marriage licence.

The public servants here actually serve the public and made my move here as easy as possible, they are definately not USCIS people which is sad because like many of you I still have the AOS to do. Because we are sort of in the marriage registry at the courthouse here as of today which counts as part of our 3 day waiting period we can get married any time as of Monday, which we will be doing next week. The people here fantastic, helpful, friendly and very welcoming, this beat Ottawa by a long shot.

That's wonderful, Ron! It's about time that things started to go easily for you - you've already used up all of the 'trouble' (and then some!) load, so let's hope it is all smooth sailing from here on in.

Hi Ron/Sharon!

Congratulations on getting your SSN so quickly and with no problems!.. :star:

And now that you have your Social Security Card, remember not to carry it with you, as indicated about such on the card (funny, really), and have that number memorized, as you are going to need it for pretty much everything around here in the USA. Your SSN is pretty much your USA id....and guard it with your life against identity theft!

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, does your SSN card have a "golden USA" logo on the bottom? The reason I ask this, was that I wasn't sure if that was a distinction between non-citizen SSNs versus citizen SSNs. Or is there some other reason behind the "golden USA" thing....hmmm...

Likewise, I got my new SSN quickly too...Told them about my new Citizenship status on Nov 24, and got my new card on Dec 3, even though I didn't need a new card since I already have one, but they insisted on giving me a new one anyways. That was quick! (Though can't say the same thing about my first SSN though..took them 8 weeks to verify immigration status...As well, they lost my son's SSN...had to order a new one....took them 8 weeks...Nevertheless still better than the USCIS overall..lol..)

Lol..And now I have 2 valid SSNs (one I got as a PR, the other as a Citizen)! And 2 valid driver's licenses (one non-enhanced, one enhanced)!

Oh yeah, I agree, all other US government agencies are overall better to deal with than the USCIS. Sad, really, as they are all government related too. The USCIS can sure learn a thing or two from them, indeed! Lol..If you like US government agencies, the one I recommend to deal with is the DMV. And depending on your state, you can have your Canadian license transfered over too, with no testing required (which happend to me, no problems...10 mins in and out with a new license). They have the fastest, reliable, and friendliest service (well, at least from my experience)....For example, it took $545 and 10 months to get my 10yr green card with an RFID barcode thingy on it from the USCIS, versus, it took $80 and 12 days to get my 8yr enhanced driver's license with an RFID barcode thingy from the DMV...Same type of travel document good for land travel....Why BIG the difference...Who knows......

Good luck too, in getting your marriage registry, and with dealing with other agencies and the USCIS too.

Good luck with the rest of your journey as well. May you enjoy married life with your loved one soon!

Ant, I have carried my Canadian Card since I got it and that is a long time. I don't believe they don't plastify the cards for durability, but I guess I will have to hide it as everyone else does or should.

I do have the golden USA at the bottom of my card, did your first card not have the USA in gold? As for the drivers licence I will be getting a learners permit, they call it something else here, but that is because I haven't driven since 1976 it will all come back very quickly though.

I am hoping that everything that is left to do goes quickly and easily and it will if they all work as thesocial security Department did and not as USCIS, I as everyone else have had enough of them and their tactics.

We are getting the marriage licence tomorrow and will be getting married on Thursday evening hopefully in a park downtown where it is all lit up in seasonal colors, and I hope to have pictures to post latter.

Hi Ron/Sharon,

Thanks for your reply too, especially about the "golden USA' on the bottom of your card. Ah ha, so now I see that the "goldden USA" logo is for everyone here in the USA, regardless of immigration status. I thought the gold USA thing was just for US Citizens only....I guess not then....

As for my first SSN Card, no it did not have a gold USA on the bottom (which I got when I was a permanent resident a few years ago), but my second SSN card does (which I got as a US Citizen recently) and my son's SSN (he is a US Citizen born recently) has a gold USA on the bottom too....

I guess they must have made such changes recently about how the SSN card so that they all include that gold USA thing on it..

I wonder what this "gold USA" thing means..hmmm.....must be a new security feature, or something like that....

Good luck with getting your learner's permit and that you will have good luck in dealing with the DMV!

Don't worry, I think that you will do well there, as you've driven before, and I think that driving is one of those skills that is kind of like riding a bike: "once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget how to do such". In the meantime, you can still "refresh" yourself, by going over the driver's manual, and getting some practice driving time too.

I agree, we've all pretty much had enough of the USCIS' tactics....but rest assured, not all government agencies are like that, and they are more like the SSA and DMV, in that regard. Lol..wish the USCIS can learn a thing or two from these other government agencies...sigh....

Good luck too, about getting your marriage license too and with the wedding ceremony.

Wow, it sounds very nice, to get married in a park, the lights lit up, and with the seasonal colours in the background too. (likewise, I got married in a park, and it was nice to have such outdoors too).

And yes, looking forward to seeing your pics and updates too! Do keep us all updated here on vj!

Again, congratulations on getting married soon, and may you and your spouse happily enjoy married life together..:)

Hope you have a glorious wedding tonight Ron and Sharon! Many blessings to you both! It's going to be chilly tonight there, but we got married outside in April, thinking it was going to be in the 60's and it was 22 degrees! It won't matter though, you'll both be warm with love. :luv:
