In what way? Without other evidence of being here legally, it doesn't help open a bank account or get a driver's license. It is not even a valid form of ID without some other official photo evidence.

jesbel -

sorry, the human at the counter at your local SSA office is wrong.

Go back, get another human, talk to a supervisor if you don't get approval.

MANY are not trained to handle K-1-related stuff at all - it's a pita.

But - fwiw, could be 2 issues:

1. SAVE database really not updated yet or

2. You've a name issue, something is wrong with your name.

Go Back to the SSA office, keep trying. IF, after talking to supervisor at the office (face-to-face) you don't get approval, then go to other SSA office in your area.

IMO, calling on telephone is total waste of time.

My own personal guideline/advice -

wait 2 weeks and 2 days from POE date, go in, and apply. The computer systems at SSA and CBP don't share data, but a trained SSA human can look you up in the SAVE database to check your status.

Now, yer past the 2 week + 2 day window - so I'm suggesting it's either a stupid human at SSA, or you've a name issue in the SAVE database.

When ya get a supervisor at the SSA office, ask them to look you up in SAVE db .

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

There have been reports in this community of insurance companies requiring the Social Security of a spouse before they can be added to a health insurance policy, for one thing.

Hi everyone. I arrive here in US on a k1 visa. I just got married but I did not file my AOS yet (we will file on monday). On the k1 Process Flowchart guides says I can apply for snn after entering usa. I only have one month left on my 90 days I try to get a Social Security Number today but they refused me. They said I need to get I-766 from the DHS or I-551 from the USCIS. Is this true? or should I apply for AOS first? :help:

Maybe it has to do with you getting married. We were advised to wait 2 weeks after the arrival date to make sure you are in the system. We waiting one week and one day and applied. Got a letter 2 days later (receipt) and the card in about 1 week.

Good luck

ssn is required to be a beneficiary of your spouse in their company insurance.

I went and applied about 3 weeks after I got here, before we got married. Good thing too, as the clerk wanted it for the marriage license.

I went back 3 weeks after the wedding and had the card ordered in my new name.

And again..lol...after I got the GC, and the new one ( and last one I hope) has the Not for Work bit taken off.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

I was under the impression that you could only get your SSN within two weeks of arrival from the POE. I applied to get it within two weeks of my POE, and received it on the 16th June. My hubby nor I weren't married at that time, but Alaskan law requires an SSN to get married. I didn't have any problems with it whatsoever, and it was an absolute breeze changing my name after the wedding. We ended up getting married in San Antonio, but all the same, I did get my SSN.

Sometimes the monkeys working in the office aren't familiar enough with immigration law, so do try asking someone else. If not, it could be that you do need to get married before you can get it.

Can anybody else clarify the two-weeks thing? Everyone's saying it was after, my I applied for my SSN before.

Magpie.

/edit: I double-checked the calendar dates. I do know that it took a while to get my SSN in the mail, and that I did apply for it within two weeks of getting here.

Magpie - eh - I claim it takes time for the SAVE db to be updated from the CBP data system - and it's not automatic update, it's a batch process. 2 weeks + 2 days seems the magic window for updates.

Since you got it under the 2 week window - I'll suggest the squirrels were working overtime ;) Congrats!

SAVE is just for verifing immigration status for other government agencies, for example, SSA. With SSA if there is incorrect info they move on to the next step of the verification process and normally if a copy of the immigration document is requested the sending of the copy along with Form G-845 sooner or later clears things up. SAVE only shows one spelling of your name, it either matches your immigration document or it doesn't. SSA allows for one letter to be off and still verify, for example, Bob Smith would still verify as Bod Smith.

If applying based on K-1 status and using your Form I-94 as evidence of work authorization, go with "Legal Alien Allowed to Work."
