I once worked with a doctor from UCSD, and he was an expert in controlling chronic global body pain. The key is going to an extreme health food diet. Raw, natural foods. Eliminate all sugars and carbs was a big thing for him as spikes in blood glucose levels prompt more insulin being released into the body. It is all about controlling INFLAMMATION. Doc viewed obesity as a form of inflammation in the body, responding to all the ####### we tend to put in it. Best wishes in a pain-free existence.

Recently, the TNF-Blocker injection Enbrel has been approved to treat fibromyalgia. This is a bi-weekly injection that you give yourself that works to block the body from making the TNF (Tumor necrosis factor) enzyme which is attributed to inflammation (for Severe Arthritis, Fibro and Psoratic Arthritis)...

I have a very severe and degenerative form of Arthritis and I was on the Enbrel and Methotrexate combination to control inflammation... Too much sun also affects the disease as does stress and extreme tiredness..

I have met many people throughout my course of treatments that are affected by the disease and it is very painful indeed and causes extreme fatigue. The diet issues mentioned above are a good start too... one other thing some of my friends mentioned is to avoid eggs that you do not know are fresh as the protiens found in older eggs can cause a "flare".

I have been switched to Humira, another disease modifying drug and my arthritis is quite controlled now after 12 years of rampant inflammation (it is a genetic form of arthritis that my mother had which came on at age 27) who's damage has forced me to have both hips replaced as well as both shoulders replaced and my hand worked on.. Fibromyalgia, although very painful, lucklily does not cause the extreme joint damage as seen in Arthritis or the organ damage as seen with Lupus.

My thoughts go out to them and although there is no cure, there is hope for control...

does he share????

He's not allowed to by law.

unlikely, rush don't like left coasties.

Pops is Midwest. Either way though, Rush wouldn't like him, he's hardcore blue. Conservative blue, but blue all the same. He's one of those funny cases of proud Democrats that've worked blue collar their whole life and don't even realize every single one of their values is Republican because they've been so brainwashed into believing "the rich" cause all the problems that he won't switch sides. Won't even consider it.

Although, he's one of those "almost wish Bush was back in there" guys.

Doc viewed obesity as a form of inflammation in the body, responding to all the ####### we tend to put in it.

Pops is about 130 after battling cancer. Even before the cancer, he was around 180 and had been since high school so his fibromyalgia couldn't have been complicated by obesity. However, he is one of those guys that thinks a Little Debbie snack cake and a Coca-Cola = lunch so you might be onto something with the diet.

It is a very painful 'syndrome' and is very difficult to deal with. A mild pain killer along with Lyrica has been prescribed that helped for the most part but there is still extreme pain from time to time. It really limits one's life style severely.

Many thanks to all of you for your comments.

That's what I've seen so far.

Maybe someday they'll find a cure for it.

In the short term, "I've heard" marijuana helps.

There is an old lady that many people in my area have noticed walking around, in all kinds of weather, all the time. I've talked with her and she says she walks 20 miles a day, she can't do it all at once, so she walks 2.5 miles one direction, and then walks back home, so she does that four times a day, she has been doing that since 1973 (or she was diagnosed in 1973, I'm not 100% sure but I'm leaning towards she has been walking like she does now since then). She's probably about 80, and extremely thin. She also said something about she has some kind of special wrap or leg warmer or something that prevents her legs from getting all bumpy/lumpy, I'm not real clear on that part or if it's even a fibromyalgia issue, she may have other health problems that contribute (her eye's for example looked like there was some kind of fluid problem, and she mentioned something about knowing some musicians who were fairly well known and when 9-11 happened they put on some show but they all wore disguises out of fear that muslims would target them or something... anyway, she started that story off with something along the lines of I don't know if you are old enough to remember 9-11... I'm clearly an adult and 9-11 was only about 8 years ago). I don't know what kind of meds she takes etc, might be on a whole mess of medications for all I know.

Anyway, I've heard exercise helps with fibromyalgia though I don't know why. I think I read somewhere that the diagnosis for fibromyalgia is, if they can't find the source of someone's pain, it's fibromyalgia... in other words it's not something that can be definitively diagnosed so it's kind of a way for a doctor to brush people off, without having really determined the real problem. I think it's actually a much rarer disease than would seem by the number of people diagnosed with it, I also wouldn't be surprised if people manage to get prescriptions for pain pills based on such a diagnosis (much like glaucoma).

I got to hurting so badly that I had to quit the gym, walking and playing golf in August. The doctor put me on a mild pain killer and Lyrica last month and I have become more active. I just did a 3 1/2 mile walk this monring and plan to do about the same this afternoon. I don't think I am ready for the gym yet, my muscles really start hurting if I try to do anything other than walking. Golf is my next challenge.

Oh man!!!

Do try modifying your diet to mostly raw fruits and veggies while your at it. Looks like a pattern is starting to emerge from what I've seen personally and from what other posters have learned. Hope you get well soon!

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Does anyone have any experience with fibromyalgia?

I'm an LMT. I have worked w/ Osteopaths that treat FM. It's pretty much idiopathic. There are usually a series of tender areas that are congruent with an FM "flare up". Most doctors will medicate this with pain killers or drugs like Lyrica. Some have good responses and some have no effects or aggravated FM.

Light Massage Therapy has shown to be useful to a degree if the patient and withstand pressure in the tender areas.

It's a very controversial disorder in the medical field, some doctors refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of this condition.

I can say for myself, I have worked with about 30 patients suffering from this, their pain is real but their signs and symptoms are all very unique.

from what I have experienced FM is only manageable, but there is no final cure. Diet, physical therapy, medications. Some folks have also tried alternative medicine with relatively good results.

My dad has that stuff. He takes more Oxy than Rush Limbaugh.

From what I know, it's one of those things that they still don't have figured out all the way. As our fine sis said above, it can be manageable provided they figure out the right treatment options.

I wish you luck!

If you are Canadian and looking South at the US, is the left coast on the right ?

Bun head Beck is from the left coast - a bit north west of me actually - mount vernon, washington - but he is right so he left for the right which is alright by me

Whatever he has is incurable

Lyrica seems to really help, at least so far. There are flare ups but this is 100 times better than before. I have also changed my eating habits. I needed to loose a lot of weight anyway and have been meeting my goals thus far, 1 pound a week for the last 20 plus weeks.

Has hepatitis (A, B, and C ) been ruled out?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

When I went to Jamaica I was eating lobsters every night for £5 total bill

When I got back to the yookay I was on the throne for 8 weeks

They reckon I had the hep you can get from food rather than the hooker sourced one

It's a real monster but it never reoccurred
