Changing address

Hi All,

One friend is doing the remove of status. In all his forms he has put as the postal address, his father in law address and his residence address his actual address (of course). The thing is, he is moving soon, he is not sure if he needs to inform to USCIS his change of address or not.

I always wonder about this, does mail forwarding work?

All immigrants are required to inform USCIS of an address change within 10 days of moving; by submitting an AR-11. (Also, the US Citizen sponsor is required to inform USCIS of a move within 30 days; by submitting an I-865.)

No - while mail may (or may not) get forwarded, doing a forwarding-address change at the post office is not sufficient.

Also - neglected to mention this above; a good tip for those who have moved is to make sure they put the immigrant's name on the inside of the mail box (either on the inside of the lid or someplace where the carrier will see it). This will help make sure you do indeed get mail sent to you (especially official USCIS-type mail).

When you say the "Also, the US Citizen sponsor is required to inform USCIS of a move within 30 days; by submitting an I-865" When is the USC considered a sponser? Throughout the process or only during AOS?

When we moved (I had my 2-yr GC already), my wife did not change her address using that form...

Please provide additional information. I went to USCIS website (not sure why I keep repeating this mistake) to FIND INFORMATION but as always couldn't find it.

The sponsor is a sponsor until (in most cases) the foreign spouse becomes a citizen (there are other criteria, but that's the most likely).

She was supposed to have filed a change of address (I-865) - for some documentation, review Page 4 of the instructions on/for the I-864 "Federal law requires that every sponsor report every change of address to the USCIS within 30 days of the change. To do this, send a completed Form I-865, Sponsor's Change of Address, to the Service Center having jurisdiction over your new address."

This applies to Co-Sponsors too (if any)...

Ok, so by sponsor I thought was just the "financial" sponsor that not always is your spouse. Now that I think about it, does not make sense. So im guessing this is useful in case your spouse doesn't live with you ?. Because if the couple if moving each one will have to inform the change of address using different ways?, one by the web or form AR11 and the other one using the form I-865.

Thanks for your reply.

I am not going to worry about my wife not filing a change of address. She is a USC and our evidence shows that we are living together. I understand that they need to keep track of where I am, but until they ask for an address change from her, I won't bother! For goodness' sake, they approve people without bios!!!!

I'll keep it in mind for the next time - if we have to move again

Exactly - simple forms are already lost and delayed - and now they need to link additional documentation of USCs.... ridiculous!
