I shipped a TV and some goodies at a value of 290 dollars VIA UPS and payed a fortune to ship it. Customs are charging a whopping 5,191 pesos for the package to be released. How can they justify this? Their customs fee is 15% of the item. That means they deemed the package to be worth over a thousan dollars. I outta be disputing this with UPS. I payed extra for guarenteed-money back service.

Everyone involved in the shipping business in the PH are crooks. No question about it.

Sorry to hear about that. Next time don't send any electronics because you will get taxed. Alter your description next time maybe you'll skip the tax part.

Yes, I made the same mistake a couple of years ago.

I shipped an old laptop to PI, Put insurance on it for $1,000.

Shipped it thru Fed Ex,

Had to pay 15,000 peso in customs

Never will I ever ship electronics again to PI

Said it before.... Use DHL, they are the only international shipper with employees in the PH.

There is a reason DHL has one of the best reputations of the international shippers.

I sent a used laptop, PH Customs wanted 12,000Php. DHL US & DHL PH worked together and got PH Customs revised to 600Php!

UPS, FedEx and all of the other companies contract with Local delivery scammers..err criminals... I mean services who don't give a jack about you, they just want the money they can steal from you.

DHL will cost a bit more (less than 10% usually) but it's worth the extra and they are great for shipping from the PH to the US also.

I just bought the family a washing machine from filgifts - 300 bucks (give or take a few) shipped right to her door. She said 2 very tired guys showed up after having carried it for nearly a quarter mile winding all through her Barangay to find her..LOL You can't beat the price or the service though in my opinion. Easiest way to send stuff like that!!

There is always balikbayan box. It takes forever to get there but no tarrif, also there are restrictions on what you can send. Customs in the RP is notorius for being crooks. When we pay our light bill in the nearest town in Negros Oriental the customs agents are selling relief goods to the less fortunate pilipinos. I am talking about donated goods from America. I have seen them dump it directly from of a box from an American Charity group onto a table to sell. The prices are not fair either. 80php to 140php for shorts and shirts....I can see maybe charging something like 25php to keep order, but 80 to 140 is shameful when most of the people buying are making 100php a day cutting sugar cane. A Filipino's worst enemy is another Filipino.

Have the recipient report the person charging the high tariff to the Main Customs Office. This has worked well for other VJers in the past.

I sent documents by International Priority mail once and the docs did not show up in four weeks. I contacted the main office with the customs number I got from USPS and it magically showed up two days later. The postal worker was giving an excuse it was sent regular mail, so I had my spouse ask what are these large red letters that spell Priority Mail.

sorry to hear your story. but ALL customs offices do everything to get the most money out of people.

next time don't send items that are taxable, or if you have to, ask your wife/fiancee about the balikbayan box, you can send whatever you want, pay by volume not by weight and pay so cheap!

Mine was sent thru USPS instead of 1 week it took more than a month but only because i sent an email directly to the office of the President of the Philippines complaining about my package ( because i couldn't find the Philippines postal website). The President's office sent mail to highest rank in the Philippine postal in Manila. Both offices sent me mails here in the US, telling me that they found it and delivered my package. That was fun, i actually was losing hope that my family will receive it.

Nope. FedEx is the one if you really want it done! Never let me down yet. DHL has closed down offices in the western US.

DHL has ceased Domestic US shipping but will pick-up your packages for international shipping at no extra charge.

Of course living 40 minutes from O'Hare Airport means that their regional hub is at my doorstep.
