Hi, I wanna know what sort of ID do you have with you to carry around? Do you carry around your passport?

I just did my biometrics and I may get my EAD card within a month (so they say).

I don't have SSN yet because i was late applying. I plan to apply for it when i get my EAD.

Will i get an ID after i apply for SSN? plan to get my driver licence too but for now... Can EAD card be used as ID?

Thanks and have a nice holidays all!

Your visa, expired or not, is still a good form of ID. That is what my husband uses when asked for picture ID. I don't think an EAD is sufficient ID...

We met in October 2007 and our immigration journey started in July 2008 when we filed for the I-129F Fiance Visa petition.

I used my EAD card as a form of ID last week and I had no problem at all. I don't like to carry my passport or social security card on my purse because once I was robbed and it was a complete hell to replace everything (just to think about the bank cards chills my spine) :crying:

However, once you get your EAD on the mail and you apply for your SS (and have it on hand) you can go to your local Motor Vehicle Department and apply for a Non-Driver ID. Make sure that you go to your local MVD's webpage and check how many points of ID you have.

Best of luck!

I used my passport/visa until I got my EAD card. After that I used my EAD as ID for a lot of different things like proving my identity when using a credit card or checking in at the doctors office. It is a government issued photo ID, so I don't see why it wouldn't be considered acceptable.

EAD can of course be used as an ID because it is a government-issued document, it has your photo and your date of birth and also an expiration date. I used that as my ID for a month or so until I got my GC. Once you get your EAD, go ahead and apply your SSC and go to DMV and get a permit to drive. Your permit can also be used as an ID. Hope that helps.

Cheers..

Passport is master ID, always. You are a citizen of 'that' country - this passport is your proof of citizenship, of that country.

then there's that visa stamp thingie in it, but by now it's expired.

If you have AOS RECEIPT NOTICE, I'd suggest you make a copy, carry it, folded, in passport.

You can try to get a STATE ID, but STATE ID requirements vary - cannot say you can get , or no - only you will know this, after you research it. Usually State ID issued by the same office that issue drivers license.

Eventually, with the EAD, you can get a SSN card... and should be able to get state ID also, no problems when have EAD card.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

This is outstanding advice, si man. After we filed for AOS but before we got the receipt notice, I had my wife carry a photocopy of our cover-letter for the AOS (which nicely also had room for a copy of the $1,010 check at page bottom). The sensible "CYA" thing to do is to carry with you the most up-to-date documentation that you have, at all times.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
