I was reading through the steps of the naturalization and found this paragraph:

Residency

An applicant must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Lawfully admitted for permanent residence means having been legally accorded the privilege of residing permanently in the United States as an immigrant in accordance with the immigration laws. Individuals who have been lawfully admitted as permanent residents will be asked to produce an I-551, Alien Registration Receipt Card, as proof of their status.

I googled I-551 form and from what I understand I would have to fill out that form and mail it to California Service Center? Why? Is not my green card enough proof of my legal permanent residency? Hmm.... confused.

Your green card is the I-551.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915

Yes, your green card is the I-551. You can confirm this by looking a the lower right hand corner on the back of your card. It says "i-551 Rev mm-dd-yyyy" there.

I think you sent it to the right place. Service Centers forward cases if they are falling behind. If you sent it to the wrong place, they would've returned it.

I don't think they are this courteous.
