Hello everyone,

I have a ten year green card. I haven't had time to apply for citizenship up until now. I was wondering if it's ok to apply for the citizenship, take the fingerprints, and then travel home to visit my family and come back in about three weeks. I know that while a K1 visa is in process, it's not really allowed to do so. I am wondering if same is true for naturalization process.

Yes. You are a LPR until you are sworn in as a USC. Until then you can travel with your GC. Afterward you need to wait for your US passport until you can leave the country again.

(Note: some super smart people will tell you that even as a USC you can leave the country with your German passport and apply for a US passport in Germany, yet that's a complete different issue and doesn't apply to you anyway.)

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . Hi Lika,

you can travel while your N-400 is pending. If you leave after your Biometrics appt. and you are back within 3 weeks you will be fine. After the fingerprint appt. it takes some time before they mail out the interview letter.

But to be on the safe side, you may want to ask someone to watch your mail in case you receive something from USCIS during your absence and you have to come back prematurely.

Remember the departure and return dates as you'll have to inform the IO at the interview about your international travel.

p.s. you can travel while a K1 visa is processing too :) My fiance has visited me and we're at the consulate stage now.

9/9: Mailed N-400 package off

9/11: Arrived at Dallas, TX

9/17: NOA

9/19: Check cashed

9/23: Received NOA

10/7: Text from USCIS on status update: Biometrics in the mail

10/9: Received Biometrics letter

10/29: Biometrics

10/31: In-line

2/16: Text from USCIS that Baltimore has scheduled an interview...finally!!

2/24: Interview letter received

3/24: Naturalization interview
