What exactly the USCIS investigates on the USC sponsoring you?

I was curious to know what is that the USCIS or the AO/person that is working on your case investigates regarding the person that is sponsoring you (your USC husband or wife)...

Criminal records, credit records, marriages, pending child support records or court records? Or they just check/investigate on the immigrant?

If there's something wrong with any of the places mentioned above, does it affect the petition of the immigrant? Like for instance, if they find out something doesn't quite add up, will they issue a RFE because of that (early on the process, before expedite an EAD)?

Thanks!

2 Things basically - is the USC really eligible (ie. unmarried), and do they have the income to support the immigrant.

Woops thought this was posted in the K1 section.......so replace "unmarried" with "married" add that their is a bonafide relationship/marriage with the immigrant and its fixed.

and they make sure the USC does not have convictions that fall within the Adam Walsh Act.

Thanks both for answering.... So let me see if I get this...

The USC must be (should be) a person with a clean record, and the USCIS "runs" his/her name on a national database (FBI, CIA, etc) to see if there's any red flag with it?

The reason I'm asking is that my sister-in-law claims that a person in charge with a case (Adjudicator Officer), cannot have time to do a complete background check on the USC in 4 months (the somewhat average time from sending an AOS packet and receiving the interview)... She says that it should take much more time than that, and that after the events of September 11th 2001 someone had told her that the minimum time they take investigating is 8 months to a year...

I told her that I didn't believe it takes that long and that if they find something "funny" on tanybody's application (dates of employment that do not match with what they find in the system, cases of unpaid child support, or simply not declaring a daughter or a son that they had on a previous relationship or marriage should be reason enough to issue a RFE on the case...

Thanks for the info!

It is not the USC that gets investigated, it is the intending immigrant since THEY are the ones wanting to be admitted to the USA, the USC is already here.... The USCIS just determines eligibility to marry or certification of marriage, financial able to support the intending immigrant (via tax records, w-2 and employment letters provided by the USC)

10/14/2000 - Met Aboard a Cruise ship

06/14/2003 - Married Savona Italy

I-130

03/21/2009 - I-130 Mailed to Chicago lockbox

11-30-09: GOT GREEN CARD in mail!!!!!!

Citizenship Process;

1/11/2013: Mailed N400 to Dallas Texas

3/11/2013: interview.. Approved

4/4/2013. : Oath! Now a U.S. citizen!
