hi all,

had a question about question 18 on the ds-156 form. The question states:

18. Spouse's Full Name (Even if divorced or separated. Include maiden name.)

We are pursuing a K-1 Visa and my fiance is divorced. Since it says "even if divorced or separated" i would think we have to put his ex-wife's name there. But in checking out sample forms/instructions on another website, i see this:

18. Spouse's Full Name:

If you are married, divorced or separated, write spouse name even if spouse is not going to be traveling with you or not applying for visa. Include maiden name also.

K1/K2 visa: Must write 'None' here.

So, i'm a bit confused and hoping you guys can weigh in. Many thanks!

I read the form as; 'If the visa applicant has ever been married before (or is married, since this form is used for married couples as well), (as indicated in #17), they should list that person's name (then DOB in #19) in the space provided.' They only time that I see you would not put a person's name would be if Widowed (since it only specifies Divorced and/or Separated) or were Single (never married) in which case you'd write "None." (I'm not sure what to suggest if widowed.)

I read the example form as it might be written by a single (never married) female.

Can't speak for the other site's example either - doesn't sound right from what I see. (In fairness, on our personal DS-156 we listed "None" because that was the case, never married.)
