A Passport will work. Check out the link below. And when you get a chance, read the citizenship guide. It answers a lot of questions like this one. As my late uncle used to say, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

When I started all this downloaded and printed out the M-476 and N-400 instructions and printed them out using a highlighted for what pertained to us. 74 pages as I recall. But kind of recall a US passport is considered proof of USC from your sponsoring spouse. Sure didn't read anything about a joint utility bill as evidence that caused a friend a major delay in processing for that weak form of evidence, everything they did require was submitted with a lot of extras. I sent in a copy of both my birth certificate and US passport, but wondered why I had to since I was also the sponsoring USC for the AOS and the removal of conditions. It wasn't like they were passing out green cards like they pass out religious pamphlets at any airport. Divorce papers and yet another marriage certificate, it was like we were starting from scratch.

Hi Sand,

Yes, your spouse (the US Citizen, I presume) can send in a copy of their US passport as proof of their citizenship. As well, they can send in a copy of their US birth certificate too, as proof of US Citizenship.

If it makes you feel any better, my husband (the US Citizen) doesn't have a US passport (or any passport at all), or a Naturalization Certificate, or a US Certificate of Citizenship. He only has a US Birth Certificate, and I just made a copy of his US Birth Certificate (and brough the original with me during the interview), and they were ok with that, as proof of his US Citizenship.

Lol..To this day, my husband, my son, and me, as all three of us are US Citizens...We have no US Passports...And don't plan on getting one anytime soon.....So yeah, we're US passport-less here......Just Birth Certificates, Naturalization Certificates, and EDLs. will do for us......Good enough to prove US Citizenship...;)

As for you as the foreign spouse, you need to bring your foreign passports to the interview, as they will look at that to see how many trips you have been outside of the USA, and that you have maintained residency in order to apply for Naturalization. So make sure you bring all valid and expired passports to your interview too.

Hope this helps. good luck on your immigration journey too.

Even the SSA will accept your new US passport as evidence of your new USC, so really not necessary to bring your certificate, as will voters registration, and the DMV if they require it.

Still don't know how you are going to come back to the USA Ant, without a US passport or that wallet thingy. Can't believe how that border has been changed over the last couple of years. Maybe you can come back with some kind of a Canadian passport, but do not believe you are suppose to do that as a USC.

NickD-I agree, the border has changed over the years. For example, it was only this year that they changed the rules, that more than a driver's license, birth certificate or naturalization certificate is required for USCs to go to Canada and come back to the USA. Oh well. On the bright side: Here in New York State, they offered something called an "Enhanced Driver's License", which is a driver's license only for US Citizens, but with an extra barcode on it (like the green card barcode), which is good for land travel between the USA and Canada. So, yeah, with the "walllet thingy" (lol..gotta love that name you mentioned) I can come home to the USA, as a US Citzen, with the EDL, with no problems.....(and going to Canada, I will use my Canadian passport, but I cannot enter the USA with that..)

Funny though, how it only takes 2 weeks for an Enhanced Driver's License

And it takes 10 months (in my case) for a 10yr Green Card

Both have the same barcode, both are good for travel...

Lol..If the NYS DMV ran the USCIS....Things would sure be a lot more faster and efficient, indeed!

Hi and thank you so much :)

Well my spouse does have a Certificate of Citizenship but the thing is, we were married in 2003 and seems my spouse lost the original one , so in 2005 applied for Replacment of Certificate of Citizenship and for sure i wasnt in the states yet i arrived in 2005 . when my spouse received the replacment one was in 2006 and there in the marital status says Divorce. and this what we dont understnd why but maybe because we never registered our married here in the states plus i wasnt in the states at that time when my spouse applied for it. so actually it shows the Previews Marital states.

but the thing is .. my spouse recieved it in 2006, so i was thinking oh then i better send copy of my spouse passport it will better and i will avoid a question about that " to not get question for the IO why it says here ur spouse divorced and still married. and if i said this is the Previews marriage he/she will say but u recieved it in 2006 so u were already married.

got me??

Seems like since the sponsoring USC has no say at the interview, least to assist in explaining the evidence to help prevent a RFE, that the marital status should not be an issue on the certificate.

This led me to look at my US passport and birth certificate, no marital status was listed in either.

His USA passport is acceptable as evidence of his USC to the USCIS. Ha, say that ten times real fast.
