We just had our POE on Nov 27th and I was wondering about when we should be able to get my husbands SSC? It has been 9-10 days since POE and I've heard we're supposed to be getting the SSC 2 weeks afterwards. Unless ofcourse we land upon one of those situations where they never filed for our SSC regardless of the fact that we had checked yes on the forms that we would like to apply for one asap and recieve it once we get to the states. What if after 2 weeks...we don't receive it would I need to go back to re-apply for him or what? Which brings up another more complicated question....My husband is staying in NY now, and we are planning on staying and working there....permanently I mean. Although, I am staying in Michigan right now for the next 2 months or so because of wanting to deliver the baby with my mom and sis near. Husband is staying in NY still trying to settle up. Now what worries me is the fact that, when we applied to receive the SSC asap on the ds230 I think it may have been.....I put down my residential address at the time which was the one in Michigan that I am staying at right now...same as the address at which my husband should be receiving his greencard. I'm wondering whether the SSC being made and issued in Michigan rather than NY where we plan to stay will cause any issues trying to get a drivers license or job in NY? Also, I am also curious that what if we don't get the SSC because apparently USCIS forgets to do that part of their job (which they have done plenty of times before....just ask the member "carlish" on these forums) and we would have to re-apply for one.....would it make a difference where I applied from? I'm assuming my husband would be better off applying in NY firstly because I can't apply for him here in Michigan...that is simply something he would have to do on his own anyways...he'd have to be there to apply. And secondly because it just might be better if it were issued in NY where he plans to work and live...although I don't know how much of a difference that really even makes having your ssc issued in one state and living and working in another.

What do you guys have to say?

If they didn't file for his SSN you wouldnt be re-applying for it, It would be a new application that he has to fill out the paperwork and go into the SSN office to file for his SSN. If you dont get it in 2 weeks-ish of POE i would say go to the SSN office and see where its at, could just be late or may have to apply for it if uscis didn't do it. Iv seen quite a few posts where people had to go to the SSN office after a couple weeks of no card.

SSN is just a paper card with name and number on it, I may be wrong but i dont think it matters what state you get it in. Someone else might know more on that tho.

To further what Inky said -

getting a SSN as a CR-1 is hit or miss.

Sometimes is automatic, sometimes is not...

REGARDLESS if you checked the box...

I suggest wait 2 weeks plus 2 days, from POE date, then go to SSA office, and apply. If they can't find you in the computer system, DON'T APPLY - wait a week, come back..

The computers at CBP don't auto-sync data with anything that SSA uses, so is 'age of data' problem.

Good Luck !

Thank you Inky and Darnelle for your informative replies. :D. That is what I am going to do now, wait 2 weeks plus 2 days from POE which would make it Monday the 14th (actually plus 2 days would make it the 13th, but that's a Sunday) then I will have hubby go to the SSN office (would that be the Secretary of State office by any chance?)and then ask if they have him in the computers. If not, then I will have hubby come back after one week to ask again and then apply.

which state, not matter, only matter where HE is...

Would you mind explaining that just a bit further to me? Do you mean that it doesn't matter what state he applies in as long as it is "HIM" doing the applying, am I right?

Mumtaz -

Secretary of State - no - to apply for Social Security Card, you go to a Social Security Administration OFFICE. Sometimes, though, there are 'multi-use' federal enclaves - where many federal offices together in same building. Different agencies, different types of federal offices (IRS and SSA and Passport Agency, all together in same address, but different floors or suites, for example) . I not think of US Federal 'Secretary of State' office at all, when I mention SSA.

and.

yes - was pointed - what matters, is that HE go in the state where HE lives...

What happens if my husband isn't in the computers yet? Even if I come back after another week, what if he is still not there? What does it mean? Would that cause any problems if he's not in their system when we go to apply for him? Another question that brings up is....would I be able to go over to the SSA office and apply for my husband? With his passport and visa info...or would it specifically have to be him to apply for it. They won't be asking to actually SEE the passport will they? Seeing as my husband has his passport with him in NY, not me. I understand that they would need us to fill out some forms....and I'm pretty sure they'd rather have him to walk in personally and do it on his own...show his picture ID too, I'm sure. But I was just hoping that maybe I could do it for him from here in Michigan.....I'm more familiar with such things than him (which isn't saying much lol, but still) we both would feel better if I did the filling out of the forms rather than him...or was at least there to over-look what he fills in and whatnot. And since I can't be there........

Does not being in the computers mean he won't be getting his greencard....or does that mean anything towards his visa or immigrancy?

I believe you can fill out a form at a US Postal Service office to have all your mail routed from one address to another address. Just tell them that you're moving.
