Update status of SSN after receiving the greencard

I have received my conditional permanent resident card a few weeks ago and was told to update my status with the social security office. I would have to take off some time from work to do this and since I just started a new job, I would like to avoid asking for time off to do this.

I just looked online to find out if I could possibly update my status via phone or online, but couldn't find any helpful information.

Does anyone know if this is possible, and if not, what are the consequences of not updating your status?

It's a pain to not update your status, I assume you have the "not valid without DHS authorization" on it. It's a good idea to change it. You can call, they are generally very helpful and should be able to guide you as to what to do and how to do it.

Good luck.

Thank you for your answer, canadian wife!

I do have the "valid with DHS authorization only" on it, but I thought that the permanent resident card is exactly that. So it should only be relevant when I apply for a new job, and then I could just show my card as form of DHS authorization to work, right?

I will call them tomorrow and see what they say. I am almost certain though that I'll have to go there in person, because they will need to see proof of the status change. *sigh*

I respectfully disagree. I got my SSC in 1991 and didn't have to show it once in 18 years. All that's needed is the number and that won't change ever.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Hi guys i have a similar situation..and i agree that you need to update and go there in person ..here is my situation

i entered usa on CR1 visa when i applied for SSN& card..i hadnt recieved green card at the time.

They said i will receive card in 2 weeks but i didnt get anything..when i didnt get any SSN i went to social security office again..then i gave them my green card and other documents which i gave them first time and the lady on counter said that my green card is a better and more important id than a copy of passport..and maybe they were waiting for my green card..she said she will update the application and i should get a SSN in 7-10 days..but again its been more than 2 weeks i didnt get anything.

When i call them all they say is that i havent been given a number yet.

I think if you got green card after applying for SSN then you should update your status with them without wasting time.

Also if anyone has any idea how long it might take for me to get SSN pls help or someone with similar situation pls share..also Betty pls keep posting about ur case..m sorry i dont know which type was ur visa..i think our case is almost similar

Okay, I called them today.

I asked the lady if I need to come in to update my status and she said no, we have you in the system already as a legal alien authorized to work, there is nothing to update. Only once you become a citizen, you will have to come in with your naturalization certificate and update your status, until then you are all set!

Yay!

@VISA2US09: I came here on a J-1 visa (as you can see in my signature) and still had my social security number/card from 2003, when I was in the USA on my first J-1 visa for one year. This was just a question regarding updating my status from J-1 to conditional permanent resident with the social security office.

  • 3 years later...

I'm having a similar problem.... I also have the 'valid for work only with DHS Authorization' and now have my Green card. If there is nothing to change, then why do i keep getting on Job Application websites that my ssn is invalid? Also this has happened to me with other things.
