I doubt anyone would begrudge donations to the worthy cause but doing it via book royalties seems rather a cynical ploy.

What relation does the book have to the tragedy and why try to associate the two via donation. Palin is a wealthy woman so why not just make a private donation?

How wealthy is Palin?

I would imagine comparatively speaking, she is not wealthy and this book deal might be her first taste of real money.

Actually she is quite personally wealthy, worth millions in fact, prior to the book as I understand it.

Can't begrudge her making a donation to such a great cause, but would agree it appears a bit self serving vs just privately donating to the cause.

Since Danno will think me lying about her net worth, here are some links you can follow up to double check:

I doubt you get to be a State governor without a few million in the bank.

Comparitively speaking to whom? Most Alaskans? Me? You?

When I see things like "Oprah donates $2000 to childrens hosptial" or "pro-athlete donates $10,000 to homeless shelter" in the news it makes me wonder why we don't see things like "Joe Blow just dropped $2 in the Salvation Army pail outside Wal-Mart." It's about the same thing, isn't it? Plus, I'm guessing Joe Blow doesn't offset his tax assesment by making donations to charity.

Charity and memorial funds, etc., sometimes great things. But when we give celebrities special kudos for a drop in the bucket, we do a disservice to the hard-working Americans out there who donate as well. If a celeb is donating to raise awareness, OK. But if they're donating to make it appear like they're really helping out (by donating .00000001 of their income) then we should question why they're a celebrity in the first place.

I imagine every library (or at least the main branch) in the country would buy one. That might help with sales. Can't imagine it'll become a best seller or anything, though.

Palin's book was a best seller for weeks before it was released. I bought several copies to gift to my conservative meetup group members.

NYT best seller list. Saturday, December 5, 2009

Hardcover Nonfiction

Top 5 at a Glance

1. GOING ROGUE, by Sarah Palin

2. HAVE A LITTLE FAITH, by Mitch Albom

3. OPEN, by Andre Agassi

4. SUPERFREAKONOMICS, by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

5. ARGUING WITH IDIOTS, written and edited by Glenn Beck, Kevin Balfe and others

Are you sure two of these items weren't accidentally copied over from the fiction list?

That's not an unusual tactic, however. Many people and organizations will promote themselves as "giving a percentage of the profits" to a particular charity.

But you know what? I don't care WHY they're doing it. The important part is that they're doing it at all. People will buy whatever they want to and since we already know there's a sizable number of people who'd buy her book WITHOUT the royalties given elsewhere, the fact that those royalties are spent somewhere good is a benefit.

As I said - I doubt anyone would begrudge money donated to a worthy cause. That said, the idea that donating to charity is wholly altruistic in nature is rather naiive.

The fact that this donation is coming from sales of a book about the life of a person widely speculated to be running for president in 2012 - makes it a wholly politically motivated gesture.

Palin is doing quite well for herself

there are a lot of people with 1 million in assets. what she doesn't have is 1 million in assets and 1 million is cash or something that converts to cash in a day. her book will do wonders to her bank account, but before the book, she was not wealthy or rich. if the book deal wasn't in the works, she could have never quit her day job and continued to pay to mortgage and support 5 kids. if you don't have the option to quit working without falling behind of the bills, you aren't wealthy or rich.

i saw nothing in the links that suggested she had a lot of money.

I second this one. In this day and age, $1.2 million in assets doesn't take you out of the rat race, especially when most of it is a house and vacation retreats. Fishing rights equates to a small business. She has the governor's salary and her husband has fishing income, which is a lucrative business because it is rigorous and dangerous. When I look at this report, it really just proves that they are a self-made American family who worked hard and still work hard.
