For some reason, this site www.choicepoint.com is redirect to http://www.lexisnexis.com/risk/. Anyone get a free report from them, yet?

ChoicePoint and LexisNexis are owned by the same parent company. Try this one:

https://www.choicetrust.com/servlet/com.kx....nnel=disclosure

I followed the instructions there last summer, and got a copy of my report without any problems.

Bear in mind that Choicepoint already has your personal info, in addition to a whole lot of other information about you. By providing a copy of your ID, you're not giving them anything they don't already have. You are only proving who you are and where you live. They are obligated to share with you any information they have on file about you, but only if you can prove your identity. I just sent a photocopy of my driver's license and utility bill.

Also understand that Choicepoint is notorious for having faulty information in their database. Like a credit reporting agency, they have no way to confirm the information they collect. However, other people do use this information to evaluate you, and will presume the information is accurate. When I got my report I discovered they had a record of a homeowner's insurance claim that they attributed to me, but the claim was actually made by the person who owned my home before the person whom I purchased the home from. My insurance company discovered the claim when I applied for homeowner's insurance, and they insisted that the repairs be inspected before they would insure my home. However, my insurance company obviously knew that the claim didn't come from me. Choicepoint got their information from the C.L.U.E. database, which was incorrect. This minor error wouldn't have made any difference to the consulate, but a more serious error might have made a difference. For example, what if my report had erroneously contained a record of a recent bankruptcy, or a record of a professional license having been revoked? These might have cast doubt on my affidavit of support. What if my report contained a record of a business partnership with my ex-wife? This could be viewed by the consulate as evidence that the divorce was temporary in order to be eligible to petition for the fiance visa (a scam which is apparently somewhat common in Vietnam).

Anyway, the consulate is going to have access to this report. I think it would be better to know what they know, especially if there are errors that can still be corrected before the interview.

As far as why choicepoint.com now redirects to LexisNexis, I have no idea what happened there. Perhaps it's part of the long term consequences of ChoicePoint's acquisition by LexisNexis in 2008.
