I am trying to come up with a way to counter the movie with something positive if it is shown locally, whether it be to offer free books about the Prophet or Islam, seeing if the mosque would be willing to invite people who attend the movie to the mosque to see what it really is about, or simply to go and make a peaceful presence... not sure what, but I will face it with kindness.

On the topic of the thread, just about every review I've read about it is quite negative. It's the same ol same ol talking heads coming out from behind their websites.

In the end, Allahu Alem, I'll leave it to God to deal with.

As a non-muslim, I'd like to add something. First of all, there is no way anyone can deny the fact that there is a bad face of Islam being portrayed in the current events of the world today. When a terrorist is fighting a war in the name of Islam and blowing up places and killing people, then ofcourse Islam is gonna get a bad rap. However there are alot of educated people in the world that know that these "terrorists" don't really know the true meaning of Islam and are giving it a bad name. In every religion, there are bad seeds. I am a Christian, and when some Psycho-Christian blows up an abortion clinic in the name of Jesus, I don't associate that with my faith because that person obviously does'nt know what being a good Christian means.

For all the Muslim sisters in the forum, I know its hard to ignore propaganda like this, but you have to find a way to do it. This project doesn't represent the true meaning of Islam, so don't associate it with yourself or even bother to defend it. :star:

On one side there are people constantly asking "where are the voices of the moderate, peaceful Muslims" and on the other side we have people who suggest we ignore propaganda and mispresentations of Islam.

If African Americans had chosen to disassociate from the propaganda was that was spewed about their "inferiority", there never would have been a civil rights movement. Today, rights are being stripped away, and it is propaganda like this, the biased news and BS from politicians that fuels the widespread apathy to fervent support of such measures. If we don't counter it, more people fall into the trap of believing such measures are justified. Just last week, the last 9/11 detainee was released after spending almost 5 years in jail, a man with no criminal record, but hey, he was Muslim. Barely made the news.

Plenty of people cannot distinguish between propaganda and fact, between news reporter and pundit. So the couple from Middle America (or even Baltimore  ) tries to be worldly and goes to the theater to learn about Islam, and walks out some skewed image about Islam and we should ignore it. Then the same couples goes to vote. The people with least knowledge are most impressionable by such things, and if Muslims and people who know better don't counter the negative media, the ONLY thing a lot of people will know about Islam are planes flying into buildings, suicide attacks, cartoon protests and movies like this.

Sarah, I sincerely hope Hicham never runs into any racism when he is here, but your perspective may soon change. I believe it was Jenn's husband who was hassled when applying for a job at the airport shortly after he got here, and people think this is ok because "the world has changed since 9/11" and the reinforcement of the dangerous Muslim/unsafe world concept day in and day out on TV and in movies.

Rebecca,

This is exactly my beef. This country has gone through a phase of "political correctness" that has bordered almost on the ridiculous. Being a "kinder and gentler nation" was at one time became almost a threat. (Ever had to sign a sexual harassment policy?) Well, the wheels fell somewhere along the way. By the very laws of this nation we are not to discrimate against any people. This government was founded by immigrants and has always had it doors open to those of all lands, hence such protections and encouragements were put into place.

Now, however, it seems to encourage discrimination. Turn on the tv news, listen to the wording of the presidents speeches, geez you can't even unwind to Comedy Central! Carlos Mencia sickens me! It's ALL about us vs them. Even being aware of it, its difficult not to get caught up in it. We do it here! There is a sickness in this world, and it really tears at me that its actually encouraged to grow in this country at this point in history. All we can do is pray people become more educated, pry their paradigms open a bit farther and see beyond the veil of the media.

JP....That couldnt have been worded better....I dont want to cross any lines here, but to all you muslim women, I think you all bring this upon yourself, with all my respect, You know how half of the world views islam, and unfortunately, many people on VJ view it in a negative aspect....so WHY add fuel to the fire????? The ME/NA forum is not limited to only the opinions of muslims, it is a free internet forum, where thousands of christians, jews, protestants, hindus, and even atheists come everyday, You cant expect everyone to agree with you can you? Thats not how the world works...No disrespect to you ladies or your religion, but JP is right.....do us christians come on here posting things about abortion rights, etc? NO, and only because we know it would cause a HUGE war......Visa journey, is an immigration site, yes there is time for Off topic, but most try to keep it an off topic that will not cause bashing or war....Maybe keep the debateable topics to instant messages or the yahoo group....Everyone moanes and groans when someone voices their opinion, yet, you must know by now, it is ALWAYS going to happen....

Edited to add....I mean no disrespect to any of you or your religion

In the end, Allahu Alem, I'll leave it to God to deal with.

That's a good approach. Unfortunatly, I'm burned out in the protest arena. My convert zeal was being an apologist and high profile muslim on campus, and I've finally come down off of that high.

If you're looking for stuff to hand out, Why Islam offers spiffy brochures that you can read online and then order. Our MSA got a ton for 10 cents each I think, which is cheaper than printing them out yourself.

On one side there are people constantly asking "where are the voices of the moderate, peaceful Muslims" and on the other side we have people who suggest we ignore propaganda and mispresentations of Islam.

another thing you can hand out to people is a small slip of paper with a link to this website. In fact, it might be a good idea to get a bunch of links to websites specifically voicing that opinion. that might make a good thing to hand out.

Some that I like are

http://www.zaytuna.org/seasons/seasons1/De...27s%20Grace.pdf

http://www.zaytuna.org/articleDetails.asp?articleID=93

http://www.zaytuna.org/articleDetails.asp?articleID=65

http://groups.colgate.edu/aarislam/response.htm

Something that I don't understand is why people don't simply google "muslims condemn terrorism." Hell, that's what I do every time someone asks me why muslims are silent. In fact, here's one of my favorite articles on the whole issue.

I'm going to add these links to my sitejot, for future reference.

Hmmmm.... "to all you Muslim women" ??? and "do us Christians come on here and..." ???

Anyway to Kelly I say -- I guess you haven't spent much time in Off-Topic, where certain individuals keep up a barrage of posts with the basic premise that entire Muslim countries should be nuked into a sheet of glass. Also, certain members who characterize themselves as Christians have made some very un-Christian remarks about anyone who doesn't believe in their particular version of fire and brimstone.

Glass houses.....

Jackie, as i stated 3 times.....no disrespect....maybe the wording sounded a little harsh, but was not meant that way...its just tiring that the same people keep posting things that THEY KNOW is going to cause a HUGE conflict, and yet when the conflict starts they ###### and moan about why people are stating their opinions, Islam is a sensitive subject on this site, and i think most people should have learned by now that its probably not the best place to post things....

MK....the people on this site LOVE for all of the peolpe in ME/NA to post something islam related....this is my point...so why keep doing it? when we all know the consequence

And yes MK i do see the constant dogging of muslim countries by random people in Off topic. but honestly, if muslims are comfortable with themselves and their religion, and they know the true meaning of it, why even go inside the topic to hear the bullsh*t coming from haters mouths? And then proceed to post, knowing the only thing it is going to do, is please the OP for causing drama in a visa based website?
