Doesn't matter. A flagpole with old glory flying on it is only an eyesore to those who hate America.

The HOA should kiss hiss A##$

Sorry you're wrong. He should be able to do whatever he wants, and even be allowed to change his mind. He paid his dues.

Well, them and the HOA. The HOA that he's a part of.

The HOA should kiss hiss A##$

Why?

Sorry you're wrong. He should be able to do whatever he wants, and even be allowed to change his mind. He paid his dues.

Why? He paid his dues to the HOA as well. If we start allowing folks to break the rules just because of who they are and what they've done then we lessen our own protection under the rules.

Folks posted a while back about cars being up on blocks and different siding and stuff. What recourse do they have if their next neighbor decides to do that? So it's not a flag pole erected by an old vet... but it's still a violation of the HOA.

A violation is a violation.

I don't think they (HOA) hate's America necessarily, thats a bit extreme to question their intent. Like Slim said the HOA is enforcing the rules that this man agreed to. I just feel that a person with his distinguished service maybe deserves to have the flag he fought for on a fuggin pole if he wants it. I mean honestly, the HOA could have turned a blind eye to it. But if he lives in one of those senior communities the HOA can be kinda crazy (Ever see the eposodes of Seinfeld with Jerry parents and the HOA?)

It's sad to read this about this man. When my fiancee was here visiting here from Russia she said the one thing she though was amazing is how we fly our flag everywhere. She was really impressed with this, she saw that Americans were proud of their country and their government (as flawed as it can be at times) but she explained to me that she and other Russian ppl she knew didn't have the same pride in Russia and in their government, Not to say she isn't proud of being Russian she is proud that she comes from a country with a rich with culture but she has little to no pride from the widespread corruption and the oligarchy that is the Russian govt.

Okay, here's the gist of it all: he signed a LEGALLY BINDING agreement with the HOA. It doesn't matter who he is or what he has done. The law doesn't care about that. All that matters is he signed whatever document he needed to in order to live there and if he didn't read the fine print, that's his mistake.

The HOA isn't even saying he can't have a flag. They just don't want the pole there. That's it.

There's a good reason for HOAs (even if some are overzealous and dictatorial). An HOA protects homeowners from those who'd ruin the neighborhood and/or devalue the property. Would you really like it if your neighbor decided to paint their house bright pink, placed plastic flamingos on their lawn and hung various neon lights in the shape of beer bottles and naked ladies around their property? Not only would that be obnoxious and a real eye sore, it'd serisouly hurt other homeowners if (and when) they decide to sell their house. Who's going to buy a house in a neighborhood with neighbors like that?

We have a homeowners association and they are pretty reasonably really. They are supposed to prevent people turning their dogs out into the street so they can come and pee on my lawn but they don't. I then have to dig up the burned section and replace it.

All in all I think homeowners associations are a good idea and help keep up the home values for everyone. We have a repo house on the street and the association mows the lawns and keeps it tidy

I can't imagine any homeowners association in the US who 'hates America', so that comment belongs to the birthers and deathers etc who have done so much to hurt America's reputation in the world.

We all know old goats who start to go a bit funny in the head and start to become demonstrative. There was one near me in England who hoisted his wheelchair onto his roof as he demanded special consideration because of his disability. It stayed there until he died and nobody wanted to buy a house anywhere near him.

These people deserve our gentle consideration and we should make allowances, but it does affect people around them so there has to be a limit or they will start playing the star spangled banner over loudspeakers at 200 decibels for 24 hours a day.

At least it was an American flag, but imagine if it was a Confederate Flag flying huge and high over the house - that would chop 40% off everyone's house price straight away (It would in Washington State anyway)

Exactly right. If he does not like it, then why on earth did he sign the HOA agreement and buy the property? Dude needs to deal. Or move.

You're really bent on this "Hating America" thing. The issue is not that black and white.

I personally feel that a person like the man that fought in 3 different wars and has a MOH and P.Heart deserve a little bit more for what they have done. But when you sign a legally binding contract you should be fully aware of what you are signing your name to. And how I feel about it doesn't make a ####### of a diffrence. That is the agreement the man signed to.

I mean the HOA doesn't let me put pink flamingos on my front yard, it doesnt mean that the HOA hates pink flamingos. They are trying to protect the value of other ppls properties. Which is understandable.

How does old glory being flown with respect on a flag pole bring down the value of other people's houses? That assumes the rest of the community and prospective buyers also hate America.

 WTH does hating America has to do with the neighbors not wanting to ruin their view with a flagpole?

Like DPX said, the dude signed a legally binding agreement. He will have to deal.

How does the US Flag on a 21 foot pole ruin their view? Most people like to see Old Glory flying.

I don't know if you are being serious or kidding.

It is the pole they have issue with. Some may consider a metal pole in the front yard an eye sore. Like the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Some people might hate the aesthetics of the flag, it does not mean they hate what the flag stands for. But again the issue is with the pole.
