Hi.

I've worked for temp agencies in the past.

It really depends on what the actual job site wants. There are certain types of jobs, temporary and they will tell you how long it is expected to last, and temp-to-hire jobs.

If you get a temp-to-hire job, the actual workplace will pay the temp agency for you.. for each hour or salary... and after a certain amount of days, if the workplace wants to hire you, they will hire you through your agency.. if they don't want to hire you, you will go back to the agency and they will find you another assignment. If the workplace wants to hire you, usually they do it within 90-120 days.

If you have any other questons, let me know :)

Thanks for the info! I have another question. Do I get to pick the job or the agency will assign me one based on my qualifications and I will HAVE to like it? I know I am kinda picky when it comes to work

A good agency will get information about a possible assignment and ask you if you feel its something you would want to do. Based on your response to the initial info, you then either proceed to an interview with the comapny you'll be working for or you ask the agency to look for something else.

I started off working for an agency back in late Jaunary. I had a face to face meeting with one of their recruitment consultants who went over my resume and got additional information about the type of work I was looking for. I would think twice before signing up for an agency who does not want to see you in person before trying to place you. That face to face meeting enabled me to explain my immigration situation in more detail than I was able to cover in my resume.

Once I had met with the agency I was contacted with details of the jobs they thought would be suitable. I interviewed for one job after deciding the details seemed a good fit but never heard anything back. I was then given the details of a second job which also seemed a good fit. I said I'd be happy to be put forward and a telephone interview was arranged with the company I would be working for. That went well and I was called for a face to face interview with the firm and they hired me the following day.

I was hired on a 6 month right-to-hire contract but was actually offered a permanent job after just 3 months. While with the agency I was paid weekly, took advantage of their insurance and had a weekly meeting with the contract manager and a monthly lunch with my recruiter to check everything was going ok.

I was very happy with the agency I went with and felt that their pro-activness and the face to face meeting prior to being placed were an important factor in finding a good job with good prospects. Remember... the agency need you to be working in order to make any money so it will be in their best interests to take some time to find out exactly what you are looking for.

Good luck (and apologies for the wordy post !!)

Mark :)

More than likely, what will happen is they will take your job experience into consideration, and depending on what type of job they are looking for, they will have you take computer tests to decide your level of competency on certain computer programs. I took tests in MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Access and scored high on them.

After they do this, when they find a job they feel may fit you, they will contact you by phone. You have the right to refuse any assignment that you want to. They would rather have you tell them that you wouldn't like the job instead of you going to the job and leaving after the 1st day.

Happy hunting :)

I used a Temp agency when I first got my EAD... my first job was for a set period, 3 weeks.... my second job was a temp to hire and after just 3 weeks I was offered a full time post with the company... I had to continue with the temp agency for a further 2 months and then got my contract with the company I am now working with...

Using a temp agency worked well for me... I had lots of face to face contact with my consultant and at no time did I feel any presure to take any job..

Good Luck in your job hunt

Kezzie

I worked for Kelly temp services a few times. (They did the typing speed test and asked me what software I knew). Both times worked out really well for me, the first job was to replace someone while she was on maternity leave so it was a long-term temp job. I was on summer break from school, but I was offered a full-time position after my temp stint was up (although I turned it down as I was going back to school). The second was supposed to be a short job and wound up extending indefinitely. The company was perfectly happy to continue paying the temp agency. I just found a better job that was more in my field and left for that one.
