I was wondering if there is anything preventing a person from purchasing a R/T airline ticket from a US airport to Lagos in their fiance's name but the fiance only uses the return portion of the flight.

I looked up flights with this idea today and the cost of the flight was approximately $1200 total, on Continental, Delta and AirFrance for our dates of travel compared to a much more expensive fair if the ticket is booked from Lagos to US.

I looked at the ticket rules and honestly I didn't see anything that would prohibit someone from purchasing a ticket this way, except as stated in the rule below:

A ticket looses all value if/when the passenger associated with the ticket during any part of the travel does not show up at the check-in counter or cancel the booking at least 2 hours before scheduled departure or as required by specific airline rules. Customers desiring to make last minute changes (within four hours of scheduled departures) must contact the airline directly for assistance.

and

All customers travelling internationally will be required to obtain and carry necessary and pertinent travel documents including but not limited to, Passport, Business VISA, permanent or semi permanent Work VISA, Student VISA, Transit VISA, Advanced Parole etc... Traveler is responsible for the review of travel restrictions to determine and obtain all required travel documentation ahead of the originating travel date as may be necessary. Neither vayama nor its agents are responsible for providing answers to specific questions related to travel documentation requirements.

Couldn't you just call the airline, a few days before and say you won't be using the departure portion because you don't want to leave on that date, and you have found a cheaper way of going when adding up the fees associated with a fare increase, exchange and ticket changing but you will be using the return flight.

Are you required to use the departure flight but not the arrival?

Is this really any different than purchasing a R/T ticket the traditional way and not using the return flight back home? IMHO, a forfeited leg of a trip is still a forfeited leg of the trip.

I believe this is a good question. Has anyone considered or tried this?

Looking forward to a Happy New Year!!!

Most airlines have to have the passenger use the first leg of the trip in order to 'activate' the return portion. Whether the return trip is used or not is OK, but the first leg of the trip must be used. I'm not sure that what you're thinking will work. Have you checked with the airline?

Check out Emirates rates. My fiance just flew home from Lagos, had a layover in Dubai and then straight to LAX and we paid @ $900. He really enjoyed his flight, said the crew was very pleasant, the food was great, commented on how "superior" his pilot must have been. I was able to book his flight through a travel agent here in the states, paid the same rate as shown on the Emirates website, all he had to do was print out his confirmation and ticket numbers and present to the Emirates gate at the airport. No problems for him. I also asked my travel agent here about not using the 1 portion of a roundtrip ticket and he is the one who directed me to Emirates and said not to bother as this 1 way is cheaper anyway

Good luck!

You need to look up an airlines "General Conditions of Carriage"

Delta's:

A) GENERAL

1) A ticket will not be issued and in any case carrier will not be obligated to carry until the passenger has paid the applicable fare or has complied with credit arrangements established by carrier.

2) No person shall be entitled to transportation except upon presentation of a valid ticket. Such ticket shall entitle the passenger to transportation only between points of origin and destination and via the routing designated thereon.

3) Flight coupons will be honored only in the order in which they are issued, and only if all unused flight coupons and passenger coupons are presented together.

If you miss the first leg then you are "out of order" and they are not obligated to honor you return coupons. I think this is the "rule" they hang there hat on...

YMMV

You can buy one way or round trip but the first leg must be from Nigeria. But don't buy a ticket until you know the results of the interview. Many people are getting AP out of Lagos and it would be a shame to find a good deal and waste your savings one reticketing . Emerites has gone up due to the holiday travels. Also try to call Delta they show high online rates to discourage scammers from printing fake flights

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
