(San Diego, CA) -- A UC San Diego research team is close to releasing a cell phone application to help illegal immigrants cross the border safely.

Co-creator Micha Cardenas claims the "Transborder Immigrant" tool for Motorola phones equipped with GPS simply allows immigrants to find the nearest safety site in cases of extreme emergency.

However, critics such as the California Coalition for Immigrant Reform say it aids illegal immigration and the creators should be arrested.

Meanwhile, officials with the U.S. Border Patrol say the tool could help potential terrorists if it falls into the wrong hands.

Nearest emergency station... hmmmm. I wonder if this includes Border Patrol 'cooling stations'?? I mean if I were an illegal crossing, faced with a life or death emergency... I would certainly use my iPhone or Blackberry to GPS my way to safety and be saved.

No it isn't treason but it's certainly breaking the law. If you want to help illegal immigrants help them reunite with their family... in their home country.

This is more along the lines of obstruction of justice or something like that. Treason is a very serious crime punishable by death.

Maybe I misread what they are doing...I assumed it could be used to find holes, or is it like OnStar and emergency services can find you if you are near death in the desert?

Not really no. Borders are public information. Information about security is probably not available in this application. These guys are no more guilty than a GPS device maker or other product that could be used in the commission of a crime.

If the purpose was to help immigrants cross the border, its kind of stupid that they made it easy for even the border pratrol to get ahold of.
