Hello,

I have submitted DS-230 and all required documents to NVC and received checklist letter stating that I, petitioner need to submit the original marriage certificates for previous marriages.

I will not be able to submit either original or certified copy of the marriage certificate for my previous marriage. The previous marriage occurred in 2001 (overseas), and I had divorce in 2002, therefore the marriage certificate was taken from me by Court in order to go through the divorce process. After divorce has occurred, divorce certificate is issued and provided to the person.

At this point I do not know if NVC will proceed with my case further because I can not provide the previous marriage certificate.

Shall I write a letter explaining why I can not provide the previous marriage certificate?

I do have the divorce certificate for my previous marriage. Shall I send the divorce certificate?

Did anyone else have similar situation?

If you can not provide the certificate beyond your control then you can provide the divorce certificate and attach a statement why you can not. It's better to try and see how it goes. Best of luck.

Go to the government agency that keeps copies of marriage records and get a certified copy. A certified copy from the government agency in charge of keeping those records is as good as an original. Even if the court took the original, the government agency still keeps a record of the marriage and can issue you a certified copy.
