Hello,

I have been here for over 4 years and all that time I have worked really hard to get adjusted. Certain things I worked through, certain I gave up, but I still miss some food and I already know I can't buy it here.

I have always thought you can't bring food from overseas. But I met this couple at the airport coming back from Spain and they were telling me they were bringing cheese and this was allowed.

Can anybody tell me if I can get cheese shipped here from Europe ??

Thanks a lot.

Yes:
  • if the cheese is shrink-wrapped in plastic, it's ok
  • another way is to take a trip to Canada, buy some European cheese there and brasen it across US customs/immigration counter

You know, I have not tried this one yet, but I tried so many Polish cheeses made here and they just don't taste the same. Funny thing, my husband can't tell the difference, but I won't even eat american made.

I am in Virginia, I don't think I crave it enough to travel to Canada, thanks for info though.

When my wife and I first started dating, she was here in the States, and missing her German food. I just googled "German Chocolate" and found a website that imported everything I could possibly imagine from Germany. I ordered a box of different types of candy and they shipped it straight to me. She was thrilled. I would suggest Googling "Food from Poland" or "Polish food Imports" and see what you get, they'll probably ship you anything you want from here in the States.

For example, this was the first one to come up: http://minosimports.com/

Looks like they have anything your want from Europe. I haven't personally used the site I listed, but there's many more out there just like that...

Good luck.

There's a lot of Polish communities here in NY and A LOT of Polish delis/ markets. I have some close friends that make trips into NYC (Queens) and bring back tons of cheeses and kielbasa and freeze them. I don't know if you plan on taking a trip to NYC any time soon but it's also an option to look for one of these markets that may ship foods. From what I hear, it's the real deal.

Good luck, sorry I couldn't help out too much :(

Have you attended any Czech festivals in these 4 years?

The vendors who make the food usually have a booth, sometimes is regional, sometimes is national vendor...

just depends on where you are...

I attended many in my youth, across Texas...

Perhaps you should move to where the food is? ;)

-----

I would suggest is now time to study export patterns for the food you like - see which import companies are selling and stocking them.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thanks for your input everyone. Food from NYC or Chicago won't work. I lived in Chicago once, it's made locally and although it is very similar and some items are very good, it's just not the same. I guess they don't bring cheese over because they make it here. But honestly it only has the same name, all the rest is different. I found a wonderful source of sausage in MD but still hoping for cheese...

Thanks for your help :)

I feel for you on this one Anastassia, I am French and a big cheese lover, and cheese in the US is just not the same.

My fiancé and fiancé's family tell me that there are a lot of good stinky cheeses in the States, you can even find French ones. They dont realize that it is very different. An American camembert is very different from a French one! Even if made by the same brand.

As I am leaving France in a month I have decided I am going to go on a cheese diet for my last weeks here. I have started this week, hopefully by the time I leave I will be disgusted by it and wont want French cheese for while, lol, let's hope!

One thing I was missing initially when moving here was cheese. That was before I found the cheese at Trader Joes. They have a very good selection and I managed to find my favorite Danish cheese there. Also, check out Whole Foods where you usually can find a better selection than in your local Kroger or Publix.

Before my last trip to Italy, I called customs in the US to get the policy. They said hard cheeses only... I would have loved to bring some soft cheeses... They said no to meats of any kind... I brought back 20 Kilos of vacuum shrink wrapped various cheeses and they were carry on... they had no problems at any stage... Thats bringing with me and I assume the same rule they quoted me would apply to shipping.

I know Trader Joes, and stores like Whole Food, they are nice, they have a couple french cheeses, but not the nice unpasturized ones that I like. Even if labelled as French they are more of American cheeses.
