Should be - if of course he is actually interested in discussing the topic.

You'd think he would be, given the number of times he has name dropped his sister and other military relatives who are (allegedly) out there in harm's way. Seems kinda odd to be playing these sorts of petty games on a subject he has (allegedly) some personal investment in.

...or better yet, write to your Congressman and Senators to tell them to fund it with a tax increase. Let's bring back the draft too.

the same Senators and Congressman that voted over and over to de-fund the war?

no idea why afghanistan is a national security issue to the US and not europe. europe is using us.... again!

bring troops home from everywhere: korean, japan, germany, spain, england, the works.... invest in a navy if we want to be everywhere. we put troops in most of these countries to spread democracy a long time ago... mission accomplished, bring the troops home.

Oh wow, just wow, I knew something like this would come....

Is misinformation this bad in the US or...? Are you just very young or have memory loss issues?

You know that most of european countries chose to send troops to Afghanistan rather than to Iraq when Bush calls for it, right?

Most of the european countries (except the UK) screamed and screamed again that the real threat was coming for Afghanistan years ago.

France with NATO forces sent specialized units to help Afghanistan forming and training their own decent army to stop their civil war.

Europe army presence is there before you even knew what Afghanistan means...!

And if we, frenchies with Lafayette, didn't "spread democracy" in your country, you'd have a queen right now.

Your sequence of events are way out of line. And, of all countries in Europe, France has always been the least likely to help defend Europe.

Way to go with the love DED.

Since the days of Franklin Roosevelt, and the service and sacrifice of our grandparents, our country has borne a special burden in global affairs. We have spilled American blood in many countries on multiple continents. We have spent our revenue to help others rebuild from rubble and develop their own economies. We have joined with others to develop an architecture of institutions - from the United Nations to NATO to the World Bank - that provide for the common security and prosperity of human beings.

We have not always been thanked for these efforts........

For unlike the great powers of old, we have not sought world domination. Our union was founded in resistance to oppression. We do not seek to occupy other nations. We will not claim another nation’s resources or target other peoples because their faith or ethnicity is different from ours. What we have fought for - and what we continue to fight for - is a better future for our children and grandchildren, and we believe that their lives will be better if other peoples’ children and grandchildren can live in freedom and access opportunity.

Tell him to stop the escalation of the Afghanistan war. This war is lost, and escalating the violence is not the answer.

And the Democrats did everything they could to make sure President Bush "lost" in Iraq. But the surge worked there. The Democrats are making the same mistake here. And they may have the numbers to make it stick. The President risks alienating his own party with this proposal

So President Obama is finally showing a pair of balls and standing up to the ultra doves in his own party. Good for him. It's about time. He is doing the time honoured thing that all Presidents should do - learning from history. He's also listening to the senior officer in-theatre and not the politicians wanting to run the war from here in the USA. Good for him.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

You either pay for things you break or at the least... fix them.

So I would assume that the experts and Generals feel it is a good strategy to announce a 30,000 troop increase in Afghanistan, then tell the enemy that they'll be gone by 2011 "if conditions on the ground warrant it" ---catch my drift Mr. Terrorist man? Hint hint? Just stop attacking until the end of that timeframe, and we'll be gone and you can go back to what you were doing before. If you're real good, we can get out alltogether and hand over the country to you! How's that!

So you preferred the Bush approach... write a blank check to the Afghan & Iraq governments, with no defined end state or benchmarks for success? All military operations should have a "commander's intent" (tactical level) or a strategic end state... an open ended, undefined end state isn't an end state at all. Moreover the statement "if conditions on the ground warrant it" is key; 2011 is a goal but not set in stone. Finally I haven't seen details of President Obama's plan but I imagine it will include a sizable force (maybe a division) that is nearby & ready to respond quickly if something flares up after troops are withdrawn.

Lock-stock-and-barrel once again eh? Pull out, and then if it goes wrong, go in again.. This from a veteran? Ridiculous.

You can't be honest but try:

If Obama announced what he announced as a plan: Troop escalation, begin to pull back out in 2011.

Your response: Bad plan!

If Obama announced "Our troops begin to leave tomorrow, screw Afghanistan, we are done!"

Your response: Bad plan!

If Obama announced "We are sending in 200,000 more troops, and never ever in a million years leaving Afghanistan!"

Your response: Bad plan!

You don't defend or suggest a better plan, merely more blathering about anything Obama says or does being wrong.

Keep enjoying your:

OK try to think of Obama's decision in business terms... he took over as CEO of a failing business & he's trying to get the business back on track. In order for this to happen the CEO has to set goals, measurements for success & deadlines. Without doing this you can't make a profit & the business will go bankrupt. Don't get wrapped around the axle about the 2011 date... it is a goal & since it's based on conditions on the ground it is subject to change.

So CEO's typically divulge their internal strategy to their competition? I think not. Obama's never run anything and it shows.

You are under the very false impression that I am unable to think for myself... this tactic is often used by the bitter conservatives that are upset that Obama won the election. I have a vast amount of military experience & 3 college degrees... I have been there, done that & got the T-shirt. Trust me I am fully capable of forming my own opinions, especially on military related subjects.

You're starting to sound like BY. You are capable, yet you don't do it. Tooting your own horn doesn't lend you any credence. Was Hitler a good source for military strategy?

- Nice non answer on the first part. Again you seem to prefer Bush's approach of an open ended military operation with no stated goals & no desired end state. Makes sense to me B)

- As for the 2nd part I stated BEFORE Obama's decision that I agreed with SecDef Gates course of action. Compare it with Obama's & they are pretty similar. So am I able to predict the future now too?
