Hello,

I am almost done with completing the documents for I-129F submission. I am including my Certificate of Naturalization. In the mean time, I am renewing my US passport because it was stolen. To renew stolen/missing passport, I have to submit the original certificate of natualization, not a copy of it.

My question is do they ever ask for the original certificate of naturalization during I-129F process? I want to make sure this isn't the case before I hand over the original for several weeks until the new passport is issued. And yes I've made several backup copies just in case.

Hello,

Since you mentioned that you are filing the I-129F, I assume you are filing for a K-1 visa? I see "Naturalization" in your profile info. If you are doing a K-1, then you only need to submit copies of evidence for your I-129F. That is, submit a copy (front and back) of your Certificate of Naturalization. I hope this helps. Please do let us know what visa you are filing for.

Yes, it is for K-1 visa. In this case, they wouldn't ask for the original during the process? I should be getting the original back once the passport is renewed.

the USCIS does NOT require original documents unless specifically requested... a regular photocopy of original (or certified) document is all that is needed...

The USCIS returns no documents so do not send your original, as you will not get it back

No, they don't. Please can you amend your timeline/ profile info to show K1 and not naturalisation. It's not your status that it's asking but what visa you will be petitioning for :)

The I-129F Instructions Sheet says that if you were naturalized, you must submit a "copy" (front and back) of your Certificate of Naturalization with your I-129F petition. Do not worry about the original. The original is not required to be submitted with the I-129F. Please let us know if you have any more questions/concerns. Good luck my friend.

thank you. I've changed my profile to K-1.

I knew that the copy of the certificate should be included when submitting. I wanted to confirm that they wouldn't ask for the original while they are reviewing or ask for it as a follow-on request in next 4-6 weeks.

If they wanted it they would request it up front....

YMMV
