So I'm at the 2 month mark of living in the US, and my wife and I decided to kill two birds with one stone and go to the social security office together to both apply for my new card and change her name. Little did we know that I was on a time frame with the i-94 to apply before having to wait for the EAD!

I was bounced from one attendant to another who took my passport from me and asked me to verify some information. She then complained at me that whoever filled out my i-94 in the airport 'forgot' to write down my middle name, so she couldn't add it to my card. Then she decided to drop the bombshell that she thought I would "probably be denied a social security card" because my i-94 was "about to expire" (with nearly a month left on it!) So I explained to her that I had been told I had until 14 days before the expiration of my i-94 to apply etc - to which she gave me the "I know my job better than you smile".

The lady typed some more information into the computer, walked away and came back, then said "Oh it must be your lucky day, you were approved!" And explained to me that I would recieve my ssn within a week to 14 days! Good news to say the least.

This was in the Winter Haven SSN office in Florida (which is a swine to find I have to admit!) so it's just a word of advice to anyone else who may be running a bit late for whatever reason! I had 26 days until my i-94 expired and I got approved! Now on to AOS...

Good luck!

There is plenty of info on SSN for K-1s in Adjustment of Status forum, funny that you haven't stumbled upon it earlier.

Well each case is different so I thought it might help for another experience to be posted - if you have an issue with it then I will delete it!

Getting an SSN doesn't seem to be an easy process sometimes. Ian arrived in the US on Nov 1 and the SSA is still saying they see nothing in DHS about him. "It may take up to 6 weeks..." :( So far, we need the SSN for:

1. Adding him to a bank account

2. Getting health insurance

There was something else that I can't remember right now...

:(

Your reply to this person (whose post I found really helpful for my own research and who I am grateful to for sharing their experience) is the reason why I am too scared to ask anything on VJ when I haven't been clever enough to find a particular piece of information on the site. We are not all experts in navigating this site. And I spend hours on it, believe me.

Having read a number of disparaging put downs to people asking innocent questions in their confusion, albeit amongst the replies from the the really lovely, helpful people on here, I wouldn't dare ask anything now. Stressed out enough without the fear of being slapped down and the object of sarcastic ridicule.

Pointing the way to SSN for K-1's in Adjustment of Status forum was really helpful. There really was no need for the "funny that you haven't stumbled upon it earlier" comment.

My reply was for a person whose membership starts 12 months earlier and who should have had enough time to read everything on this site pertaining to K-1 visa - it does NOT stop with receiving K-1 visa, there is still AOS to be done and many other steps, SSN included.

Regarding you, read the guides and you will most likely even get all the information, that's how people start. You may even discover this handy SEARCH option that's recommended before posting. That's what the instructions say - before posting, do a search. I just did a search SSN for K1 and what came up was this guide http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

You will find out that older members do get annoyed when every new member finds it easier to post a question that has been asked and answered at least a hundred times before instead of doing a simple search.

Not me. If it wasn't for people asking the same SSN questions OVER and OVER I wouldn't have anything to do. LOL Just wish more people would ask questions before they apply. Too many people get a line of BS from the SSA office when they apply and then ask "is this normal?".

Yeah... We're on the "Can you please make a secondary request to see if Ian's in the DHS system yet" trek at the moment. Annoying.

Sorry.. I'm hogging the thread, but SSA says Ian's card was ordered yesterday! Yay!

With all due respect to the 'older members' who apparently own a public forum - I was retelling an experience for others to learn from, in fact I was trying to help some of the newer members. I wasn't asking for help, I was actually saying that through searching for information regarding the SSN on THIS WEBSITE, I managed to help myself! I'm glad some of you found it useful, as for the 'older members' if you haven't got anything nice to say, just say nothing at all. Obviously have nothing better to do.

My wife is the American citizen by the way, her name change was fine!

Never you mind them...it has to do with isolated few....and more 'old f**' vs. 'old members' lol...

I liked your post :)

Congrats on your SSN and your wife's new name, exciting isn't it?

I think I will go start a new thread titled 'how excited I am that you got your SSN'....and talk about that...care to come over and comment? Don't worry, I already searched and there are no threads about this already, so we are safe from the miserable elders lol
