When you apply for the AOS (I-485) and pay the $1010 fee the EAD and AP fees are included. So if you apply for the EAD Work Authorization with the AOS there is no additional $340 fee. Yes you can apply for the AOS and wait for the green card, but why not apply for the EAD and AP since you paid for it with the AOS.

The AOS averages 4 to 6 months to receive. A few exceptions have waited a year or longer. The Ead normally takes 90 days to receive.
