I'll also be moving to Phoenix and will be looking for professional work in social work/psychology/counseling field. I'm in a good paying job now and I know the USA is hurting economically right now. I'm optimistic.

wow! good for you!:) We are happy for you. May I ask what was your previous work in social/psychology/counseling field? and where was it?

QUOTE (Golden Gate @ Dec 3 2009, 08:29 AM) QUOTE (chinese_mutt @ Dec 3 2009, 02:25 AM) I got BS Business Administration degree.. can I also get teaching job? Just wondering.

You can go back to school and obtain your teaching credential. Having a math background is very helpful, as they are always looking for math teachers. You can bring your transcripts to a college and have them review it, to see what courses you would need to take for a credential. You might need only education courses and psych courses, if you have enough math. School Districts like to hire people who have real world experience in their field, so they encourage such people to go into teaching.

Yep, you need the course-by-course credential evaluations, general evaluation is not enough. They used it in licensing and continuing education if you want a teaching credential.

what website did u use for your evaluation reports? ECE.ORG OR IERF.ORG?

I think Careerbuilder.com actually does work. This works especially if you are in the business field. I found connections and finally a great staff accountant through the site.

Hi all

I got my EAD yesterday and start to find a job. I am an IT professional with 3 years' company experience and 3 years private. Now how to find a job that suits to me in America? Thanks.

I think it really is a case of keep sending in applications and treat your job hunt as a full time job.

I applied for any job I felt I could do whether it was in my field or not.

I kept 3 master resumes, each showing different aspects of my previous experience and qualifications. They were all truthful but played up different aspects of my skills. I would then tailor the best fitting master to the job I was applying for and make sure to keep a copy of which resume I sent for which job.

I finally applied for an admin job with a small company in my field. Three hours after I faxed my resume I got a call and was interviewed the following day. I was offered the job and will start with admin and move into IT training and some training with Microsoft and Intel for the technical side of the job. The good thing about a small company is that there is room to expand the job to fit the company's needs and make myself indispensable.

Don't just look for IT jobs but look for IT companies where you can use other transferable skills just to get your foot in the door.

I really didn't expect my first job in America to be in a field I was qualified for but it happened. I'm an ex nurse with a Masters in IT and will be working for in medical records IT systems.

It depends on what you want to do and what you can do.

My wife started with Monster.com and careerbuilder.com. Within a week she got a job in her field. (airline ticketing, something she did in the Philippines.) Also networking at Linked.com can help too; It's an employment based networking site.

If you are a nurse go to the hospitals, when you are tired of that work for pharmaceutical writing reports. (In the Chicago area, they are looking for nurses to do this at Abbott, Takeda, Baxter, Astellas and Lundbeck; I have done data entry for most of them and know these nurses do next to nothing for bank with little or no overtime on a salary basis.)

If you are unskilled and want to get into office stuff it's best to start at Walmart to establish your work ethic and then move on to a temping agency to get office experience. I know temping is not the most endearing thing on your bucketlist of jobs, but in this economy what can you do? If you don't mind hard work, temping can also help there too.

As for you in the IT, start with Best Buy and work for GeekSquad till something better comes around and you can establish yourself in the USA. I heard that they make starting $14 with an A+ and then you work your way up, in the meantime keep looking for bigger and better. Mostly what the IT market is looking for is managers.

All good advice. Only thing I could add to this would be, don't pigeonhole yourself into an area of specialisation that you may have been in. I was an IT Manager and my first job was administering NICE call recording!

I think each state has their own rules re teaching in public schools. In PA, for example, you have to have a certification. As for teaching at the university level, I'd imagine you'd have to have a Master's/PhD in Spanish or related area (guessing, okay?, just so you get started with your own research). If you want to tutor or work for a language school, then I think what you need is to know what you're doing and have some experience.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

I found your advice for Best Buy very interesting and applicable to my life... Thanks
