Maryland wanted my old one too. I just so happened to have an old one on me from a previous address so that's the one they got. tee hee

Good idea! Too bad I cut up my old one when I renewed after I changed addresses last year :(

I would like to keep my Ontario license for sentimental reasons as well.

I don't really like the new Ontario licenses(Green-ish). I liked the blue ones better.

I shouldn't complain, the Michigan licenses are kinda boring looking, hehe

I really like the Alberta licenses ... they have mountains on them and they're light blue! PLUS they have a rad hologram thingy on the back. Best.

Wow, I had no idea! So I might not necessarily have to surrender my Alberta license ... neat. That's a good thing, I like the picture on it and don't want to get another one if/when we move back ;P

Which state are you moving to?

Utah. But I might consider moving to Idaho if they let me keep my license ...

Just kidding ;P I think I'd die of boredom in Idaho. No offense intended to any Idahoans here, it's just not for me ... I like potatoes but not THAT much! ;D

While Idaho may be boring Utah isn't really the model of excitement either :hehe:

Just bugging! ;) I really have no idea. I live close but I've never been.

The only "problem" I can see with trying to maintain both a US license and a Canadian license is the potential conflict of residency. Technically when you become a permanent resident of the US you are suposed to give up residential ties in other countries, right? Technically? Of course this wouldn't apply to a duel citizen, but as a Canadian Perm Resident of the US, this could potentially cause a problem if it was somehow discovered. Or maybe I'm just reading into something that isn't really something to worry about. I'm just paranoid because I've officially seen ICE 3 times!! :P

My ontario license is good till 2014. They never took it and I have it with me in my purse all the time, along with my Nebraska license.

lol -- I definitely agree ... but I keep telling myself the outlet malls in Park City are only 45 minutes away from SLC so I will have something to do there :D

I thought the same thing about a driver's license being used to prove residency, but my guess is it's probably one of those grey areas no one is really all that sure about. Either way, I hope they let me keep my Alberta license!

I saw the DHS Border Patrol on the highway the other day! It threw me a little because we are sooooooo far away from any borders here in Fla.

I have my Ontario license still. In fact, the nice man at the Canadian passport office told me to make sure I keep renewing it because if I ever want to come back to Canada it's going to be a hassle to reinstate it.

Most States that I am aware of do not require the surrender of a forign drivers license.

If you have a license from another U.S. State you must surrender it when you get the new license.

I have both a U.S. and a Brasil drivers license, so does my wife, but I can not have a license from 2 U.S. states at the same time.

Nope you don't have to give up any ties as a permenant resident. You just have to maintain US residentail ties if you want to remain is what you are thinking. So moving out of the US and living in Canada and working there would not be allowed and you could lose your Permenent residency, but having ties and stuff to Canada or where ever is perfectly fine.

There's lots of stuff outdoors to do in Utah, I used to go through there all the time and go hiking. The Southeast is the best part, with all the red rocks and #######. Got a friend who lives in Boise, ID and loves it, though I have only driven through Idaho a few times and only stayed there once for 2 nights, so can't really comment much on the state...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Southern Utah (Moab and Zion National Park) are totally amazing. My fiance and I visited there the first time I came to visit and we went camping -- it was so fun! We haven't been since but I hope that's something we do regularly when we're living down there.

If the US State doesn't require surrender of the foreign license, then the next question is whether the province will allow a license renewal of a non-resident. If not, sure you can put a relative's address but it's misrepresentation, and I don't think I'll bother with that.

When renewing a license, if you aren't in the country to get a new photo taken, I wonder if they'd make an exception or make you travel back to the province to renew.

I'm not attached to my Ontario license, so I don't think I'll renew it. (Hm and I still have some stuff to do to notify CAN/ON governments about my move).

In terms of hassle getting the license re-instated if moving back, probably again depends on the province whether it's difficult. Like if graduated licensing makes a foreign (US) DL holder have to drive under the "new driver" restrictions. IMO they should grant a full G class drivers license to a US driver/former Canadian driver.

My brothers friend has a house in Florida and one in Ontario and spends 6 months at each. Has 2 licenses and 2 passports. I guess if you still have an address in Canada like he does...he owns a home there and I assume he still files taxes in both countries....he's basically allowed to. Florida law does state that you do have to have a Florida license after being here for 30 days....so does Ontario so really...he HAS to. Snowbirds have that option as well but I don't know how many bother.
