You get your green card after you file for Adjustment of Status.

So:

File for K1 >>> K1 Approved, receive visa in passport >>>> Enter the U.S. apply to Adjust Status (apply for EAD and AP)>>>> Receive 2 year conditional Green Card >>>> after 2 years apply to remove conditions from your green card then receive a 10 year green card.

When you apply to adjust status you should apply, at the same time, for an EAD (employment authorization document) and AP (advance parole so you can travel before you get your green card if you wish to do so).

excuse me that confuse me... so i get the green card after waiting 2 years ? or your saying i get it and its good for 2 years... XD

No you don't have to wait 2 years, you get your Green Card soon-ish (not sure how long it is currently taking to adjust status, i'm sure someone here can give you an idea) - it is only good for 2 years. After 2 years you apply for your 10 year card (called 'removing conditions)

Bottom line - you can't travel until you get your green card or your advance parole, whichever one shows up first.

OH Great!!! :D thankx

I got my green card a few days after that letter. In fact, it appears many of us have gotten 2 or 3 copies of that letter!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Finally! :) 31 days after going thru POE (Toronto) I received my green card in mail today! It's here, it's here :D

Out of curiosity I checked USCIS website (I have never done that before coz when a petition for me was filed uscis didn't even experiment with online status checks LOL) and to my surprise it was all updated and said card production ordered on Dec 2nd!

Amazing

Oh guess what! So I got my green card in mail earlier on last week, and yesterday I received yet another letter informing me that I can expect my green card within 30 days  LOL...well if for each NOA they send one would get a card that would be like a nice collection...

Obviously when you are at the finish line USCIS really wants to be friends and keep in touch :)
