Hello Guys

I am married to a US citizen and now we are expecting our first baby but the problem is that neither me nor my wife is working now and I will apply for the AOS in a few days but my wife has a severe pain that forced us to go to the ER but my wife is uninsured so they told me that they will send the Bill to the house so my question is IF I DID NOT PAY THE BILL WILL THAT AFFECT MY GREEN CARD APPLICATION AND IF MY WIFE APPLIED FOR MEDICARE OR ANY KIND OF PUBLIC ASSISTANCE WILL I HAVE A PROBLEM IN MY APPLICATION.???????????/

AND MY LAST QUESTION IS: IS IT OK IF I USED THE HELP OF PARALEGAL OFFICE WITH THE APPLICATION OR IT IS BETTER TO GO TO A LAWYER AND I WENT TO ONE OF THOSE OFFICES AND THE OWNER TOLD ME THAT EVERY THING FROM A TO Z WILL COST ME 2200$ AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY OWN CIVIL SURGEON SO DO YOU THINK THAT THIS IS A FAIR PRICE OR WHAT??????????

THANKS IN ADVANCE AND I WISH YOU BEST OF LUCK

Hospital bills are civil debts, so not relevant. And the debts would be hers to pay. I assume you did not sign anything.

It sounds like you will need a co-sponsor

Get a co-sponsor to sign for you. the medical bills won't be considered. Have her apply for medicade as soon as possible....especially if she is not working. You still need a co-sponsor in order to file.

It won't effect your immigration.

It may hurt your spouse's credit score if the bill doesn't get paid by some agency or someone doesn't pay.

Read the guides here on VJ to learn the process. Was the price quoted inclusive of the fees (AOS $1010) or not? If you and your spouse are not comfortable filling out forms then it may be wise to hire someone.

It would end up with a collection agency and possible bankruptcy, assuming she does not have the cash and can not agree a payment schedule.

No different to any other debt.

It is an outrageous price! RUN.

She, a US citizen, can apply for any government aid, it will not affect you in any way. US citizens are always eligible for government aid, it is the immigrant that has restrictions...not her. She can stiff the hospital for the bill and it will not affect the green card. Better to go to the financial department and see what they can work out, you may be very pleasantly surprised. Many hospitals have funds to help people, simple private funds that are not government aid and are simple to apply for and receive. Give it a try.

Depends how much she uses credit. If she can live without credit, it will affect her little. Many employers are checking credit scores now and it could affect job offers, but that is usually also for pretty low level jobs or cash handling jobs where they are concerned a low credit score = potential theft.

Credit scores can be troubling if you paly the credit game and need credit to live. If you live within your means, they are pretty meaningless. I haven't checked my credit score in years and can't imagine a need to, have no idea what it is, don't care. No one asks when I pay cash or use a debit card. But other people prefer to live on money they haven't earned yet.

She is a US Citizen, she is entitled to claim federal assistance like medicaid. So can your baby, as long as he/she qualifies to be a US Citizen. It will not affect you (except YOU cannot get federal assistance) and nor will it affect your sponsor, who is sponsoring you not your wife.

You shouldn't pay anything for help filing the AOS unless you cannot do it yourself and there is no one who can help you, like a friend or your wife. Considering you cannot afford to pay her medical bills at the moment, paying someone $1000 just to write on a couple of forms is crazy. You can find the guides at the top of this page, where it says guides (under the .com part of visajourney.com)

You need to ring the civil surgeons in your area (do a google search for 'civil surgeon' and your town name or check the USCIS website. Different ones will charge different amounts.

It will be harder for you to get credit of any kind-for example a personal or car loan, a credit card, or a mortgage. It may also be harder for you to find an apartment-many places do credit checks when you apply for a lease. Even utility and phone companies check your credit before they will approve you.

This could very well come back to bite you in the future. Starting out your life together with a large amount of debt is not ideal. WORK with the people you owe money to. It is much easier in the long run to do this. It's better to make small payments than none at all-and it may reduce the amount you will end up owing in interest or finance charges.

Think about the things you may want to do in the future, such as buying a house.
