Depends on what your "risk" tolerance is if the visa happens to not come in time (or heaven forbid, not at all).....

YMMV

hello! i'd suggest book the ticket when you received your passport with the visa. in any case, you cannot buy a ticket without the US visa stamp on your passport.

evemonte means that in the phils you're not allowed to buy it w/out the passport w/visa

and yes, buying a ticket is possible but very risky since you don't know if you will be approved or will have a delayed approval.

but if you're 100% confident you'll get the visa, then go for it!

Ah the well meaning and optimistic MIL. Why put your money at risk for a ticket that may be useless? What's wrong with buying the ticket the day the visa is approved or issued? Does buying it a day or week earlier going to make a difference in getting your wife to the US sooner? The risk of a denial or request for more RFE is present. There is no harm in waiting for a visa to buy the ticket. There is considerable risk of holding a useless ticket if the visa is denied or not issued before the flight.

You are very wise to wait.

We checked everything and worked out that it was ok to buy our tickets.

We got to the Embassy and despite signing our DS230 and swearing an oath we still had to provide a copy of our son-in-laws passport or birth certificate, despite these being submitted with the I-864a.

We sent the fax back within 3 hours. That was two weeks ago today and we have heard nothing. The cost of rearranging the flights was very high.

We were caught out through something that was totally unexpected. We now have flights arranged for the 18th. But we still have heard nothing from the US Embassy.

If you MUST buy tickets then pay the extra for fully flexible, it is money well spent.
