Do They Need Round Trip Tickets?

My Fiancee and her 2 daughters will be coming soon from the Philippines on K-1 K-2 Visa's. Do they need to have a return ticket to enter the US? We Plan to get married soon after she arrives.

Also, does anyone know about a 14 year old entering high school here. Back home she only has 2 years of school left. Will they give her some kind of test to see what grade she will be in?

Thank You

They do not need round trip tickets, however, they are usually cheaper than one way... I do not know the answer about schools though.

The school will give the children a series of tests to determin language skills & academic levels & adjust the class scheduals accordingly. THe school will have ESL ( English as second language ) teachers if they are required. If you know the schools they will attend you can check on line to get some info.

My spouse and her son K1, K2, came on one-way tickets. Make sure the VISAs are correct e.g. the girls are not marked as boys (as this mistake happened to us). Bring a copy of the child's school transcripts/grades and the school she will be attending will evaluate where they belong. My spouse's son is 11 and entered 5th grade just like he would have in the Philippines. He did have some problems with the language because of the accents in the States can be hard for them to understand.

Good luck with everything.

Other than the cost of the round trip ticket usually being cheaper, I am not sure why you would need a R/T ticket for a K1. A K1 is a one way entry into the US. Once she is here, she would have to file for AP before she could leave the country, or you would be starting the K1 from the beginning again.

My fiance will be here in 2 weeks. We DID get a R/T though because it was MUCH cheaper than a one way.

What restrictions are there on the date of the return trip? I'm guessing you left it open - can you still get a decent price for an open return?

My fiancée is coming in a month or so and she will want to see her son's university graduation, so we'll get an AP for that.

She may also be able to choose the return date as she will know his graduation date.

They don't need round trip tickets since they're emigrating to the U.S.; however, it is usually cheaper (it was for us).

As for the schools, most students are placed in a grade depending on their age and not on they academic level or how many years they had left in their home country. This is sad but true. Usually a 14 year old would be in 9th grade and would have 3.5 years left in the U.S. But maybe as a parent you can have your stepdaughter tested and try to push that she be in a higher grade in school.

I'm unsure of other states, but in Florida if the student says that they speak another language other than English at home they are tested as ESL students and may be in an ESL class depending on their ability in English.

They are not placed in classes strictly dependent on thier ages. The classes they are put in have everything to do with thier academic ability. Students from other countries sometimes can not handle the work at American levels or sometimes are even more advanced.

My daugter ( Thai ) couldnt do the 8th grade level algebra for example. She was placed in 6th grade math & then moved to 7 th grade for now. It serves no purpose to try to force them into classes they cant handle.

Round trip tickets kind of defeat the purpose of the SINGLE ENTRY (You leave, you don't get to come back) k-1 and k-2 visas - as commented numerous times, it's only worth it if they're cheaper.

I like to burn things.
