I-134 and a co-sponsor

I saw someone say that a girl's father could be The Sponsor as far as the consular interview and I-134 was concerned. I plan to use my dad as a joint sponsor for AOS; does this mean I can JUST submit an I-134 from my dad for the interview? And not complete one myself?'

Thanks

That's what I thought too, and I know that's how it is for AOS, but then I'm pretty sure I heard something different about the consulate.

I don't really want to have to do it because I'm going to stop working at the end of September and go down to Brazil. So by the time his interview comes around, I'll probably be 3 months out of work or so.

From what I've read so far on VJ, you have to fill out the I134 anyway, even if with a co-sponsor, who would also fill out the same form. For AOS, you *have* to be the sponsor.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Yeah... for AOS you can still have a joint sponsor though, I do hope!

Alex+R,

Excellent question. It's up to the consular officer what they want to see from you since you are the petitioner. I alway answer the question by suggesting that you should have a financial package ready for yourself in case it's asked for, but to gain some experience for VJ why not hold on to it and submit only your dad's financials. If the consular officer asks why your dad, not you, explain why. If the consular officer persists and wants to see your financials then hand them over.

At least 2 people using the US consulate in London have followed this suggestion, and in both cases the consular officer accepted the offered sponsor's financial package and did not ask for financial information from the petitioner. But that's a very small sample from only 1 consulate.

To be clear, although the petitioner is not required to be 'The Sponsor' for a K visa as most people mistakenly believe, that is the normal situation and the petitioner is required to be 'The Sponser' for an immigrant visa or adjustment (the source of the misunderstanding). So be prepared to be asked for your information.
