And I would hold any bet that any such individual couldn't do half the damage if he didn't have a gun. You can shoot and kill 4 people in little time but try and stab 4 people to death with an entire family around. Not likely to happen. That's all I'm saying.

So the same 17 people in the house would've been more keen to jump up and stop him if he would've only had a knife? Are you saying the 6-year-old or maybe old auntie or even the two twins would've done something more to protect themselves? OK, them aside, there were 12 other people there. How about them?

How long does it take to kill with a knife vs. a firearm? Where are the scores of tragedies where one lone perp killed multiple victims with a weapon other than a firearm? Taking all the mass homicides, what's the percentage of them carried out with firearms? Let's see it.

Banning firearms DOES NOT work. Plus if there was a ban, people would get their hands on a gun if they want it that bad anyways...just like drugs.

If someone wants someone dead, they will find a means to do it.....blaming the gun is not the answer(unless you're liberal-minded).

In fact, I'm a strong believer in Permits to Carry. It's part of the U.S. constitution(2nd ammendment to bear arms).

A firearms ban in the U.S will NEVER happen.

Is it as easy to get guns in Canada? Who has the lower homicide rate per capita?

Forget about ban. Find me one first world country that has gun restrictions, yet has a higher homicide rate than the US.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

To (legally) own a gun in Canada you apply for a firearm license(take a course, pass a test). Your "application" gets sent to a firearms center where they do a background check on you. If all is good, you get your license to purchase & posess...but not "carry" of course.

A lot of the gun crimes in Toronto are gang-related. I'm SURE they didn't aquire their guns the above way!

OBJECTIVE: To examine international correlations between reported rates of household gun ownership and rates of homicide and suicide with a gun.

DESIGN: Survey.

POPULATION: People who responded to a telephone survey conducted by the 1989 International Crime Survey in 11 European countries, Australia, Canada and the United States.

RESULTS: Positive correlations were obtained between the rates of household gun ownership and the national rates of homicide and suicide as well as the proportions of homicides and suicides committed with a gun. There was no negative correlation between the rates of ownership and the rates of homicide and suicide committed by other means; this indicated that the other means were not used to "compensate" for the absence of guns in countries with a lower rate of gun ownership.

But hey, this must be a comfortable position for you.

Mr. Big Dog I am shocked you take such a negative stance on guns seeing as (I`m guessing your fiance & not you) is from Ethiopia.

Gun ownership for regular citizens, is practically non existent in most(if not all) African countries......and what happened in places like Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia ...genocide. These people can`t even protect themselves against their own Government!!!

I think it`s You that should take their head out of the sand box.

By the response I am guessing you are the American citizen. No one else in the developed world has that 'protect yourself against the government' line of reasoning.

Interestingly enough, Timothy McVeigh had the same line of reasoning.

As did uncountable millions of others who are now statistics during this last century.

It's great to have faith in your government, I do... but I like to have insurance, just in case.

So basically, you're arguing from the perspective of a bunch of people like Booyah, who were called on the telephone and asked their opinion on something as opposed to factual data supported by government statistics? I really expected more out of you, Big Dog.

I'll pull some factual statistics out of my bum here and show that homicides in AUS were "compensated" for when guns were taken away. Homicide by firearm rates have decreased steadily yet homicides, overall, have not. Why is that? Maybe we should redo this telephone survey that asked poeple their opinions instead of tracking factual data.
