Hi,

My fiance had her interview on November 20th.

The C/O requested a certified copy of my tax return for 2008.

I have read about tax transcripts being taken to the interview.

But, I have never read about a certified tax return on VJ.

The certified tax return can take 60 days to obtain according to the IRS web site.

What did your fiance bring to the interview?

Transcripts or a certified copy of your tax return?

I wrote an email to the Embassy asking if the tax transcripts would be sufficient.

But you know they won't be back to work until Monday. Then probably answer my

email on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Ed

For our most recent K1 interview (conducted last week) and also for the interview of my first wife, I submitted 3 years worth of tax transcripts. You can order them via phone and you'll receive them in about a week.

Official tax transcripts should usually be sufficient for the initial interview --- what did you submit? If you did not submit them at the initial interview, I would generally think that they would be sufficient now. However, since the CO specifically asked for certified copies of the tax return that might not be the case.

If I were you, I would go ahead and order both the tax transcripts and certified copy at the earliest opportunity. I don't remember off the top of my head whether that automated request line is a 24/7/365 line or not. And then wait for the reply from the Embassy.

Do YOU have a copy of the 2008 tax return? If so, you might also contact the Embassy and ask if a notarized copy of the return would be sufficient.

I'm still a bit puzzled -- exactly what did you submit to demonstrate income?

I believe you can get a tax transcript faxed the same day.

What did you submit? I sent the last three years tax transcripts. I mailed in my form back in July and received in about three weeks.

I would say a quick response to their query is best.

She had a copy of 2008 my tax return.

A copy of 1 years bank statements and my employment letter.

My fiance misplaced the original documents that I gave her.

That included copies of all pay checks. I get a 1099 not a W-2.

I had to scramble to get what I could before her interview.

We had rescheduled once already and didn't want to again.

She has since found the original package that I gave her.

But, really the only difference is the copies of checks.

A copy of the tax return will never be accepted (anybody can fake one), reason she was asked for a certified copy. The tax transcripts (at least a year but better three years) should be enough. That cannot be faked.

Let this be a lesson for everybody: a copy of the tax return is NOT the right evidence.

Perhaps it is because the op is 1099? They may have wanted to see something more concrete from the IRS then the return from a company like (ie) HR block. This is just a guess.

I would call for the official transcripts, send them, and also tell the embassy you have requested the certified transcripts as well.

I hope everything works out for you.

I'll echo Chris's comments. Respond to the Embassy via email that you are collecting the documents and will email them ASAP. I have not had a problem having a running dialogue with the Embassy; I think they will appreciate the quick response so they won't be in the dark as to your intentions.

Thanks for the support.

Maybe things would have been OK if she had not lost

the copies of my checks.

I read from the embassy web site again.

It says most recent years tax return or tax transcripts.

Anyway, I've already sent an email to the embassy.

Thanks again.

That's what I sent and it was no problem.

You're painting a picture. If you make money (pay stubs) and put it somewhere (bank statements) and there's proof (tax return) then you're fine, provided it's 125% of poverty level.

I sent pretty much the same as Barron, I sent work letter (wet signature), tax transcripts from IRS and bank statements. The tax was 3 years worth and the bank statements was 3 months. The pay stubs were I think 3 or 4 months. I think the transcripts are what they are looking for, just go with that and you should be fine, they just want to see the history.

Best of Luck!!

I am also self employed, but only submitted two years of tax returns. What was required for me was one year of bank statements showing sufficient deposits to support the gross income on the Schedule C. I did not submit any checks only the front page of the bank statement showing the amount of deposits in the year.

If they asked for certified copies, then supply that of course. But even if you have self prepared tax returns, they should be sufficient for showing financial support as long as you provide additional documents like the bank statements for self employed or W-2's for employees.
