I agree that Halloween is weird for most Russians and I personally don't accept "dark and scary" part of the holiday.

As far as turkey, I am lucky that my husband doesn't like it, so I don't have to cook it

I am actually looking forward to that 'cooking an entire turkey' experience . Never done it before .

My mother and sister-in-law have involved my wife in preparation and decorating. She seems to really enjoy the experience, and liked black Fridat too (duh). She wants to share Ukrainian holiday food with them too, but my family has a tough time getting really excited about fish salad or jellied meat. Vika and my mom are discussing some possible compromise dishes - should be interesting.

Olivier is a "salad" even I will eat.

My wife hasn't really gotten too involved with the holiday food prep, but she is starting to eat more American food at the holiday dinners. She's coming around. We've taken a few Russian dishes with us (the more Americanized ones like pilmini and olivier) and they've been well received.
