Hello everyone! I have a silly question. My husband and I finally arrived in the US in February of this year, and he has been working up 'til now in roofing, but due to the snow coming he won't be able to continue. His family says he can collect unemployment like all the other workers, but I say he is inelligible. I say that part of the deal with the process was to prove we had a sponsor so he would not be a burden to the state. Does anyone know?

I think that he can collect unemployment, because unemployment is not a means-tested program. In order to claim unemployment you must have had been working previously. The following are what are consider means-tested and are the things that technically speaking would make a person a public charge/ burden to the state:

Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Assistance for

Needy Families (TANF), and sometimes food stamps.
