REHOBOTH, Mass., (WPRI) - A local family is coming to the rescue of a turkey just in time for Thanksgiving.

Not only have they kept him off the dinner table they are checking him in for a much needed surgery. Usually it's the president who spares the life of some luck turkey.

But a Rehoboth woman feels there's another turkey that deserves a break, and the reason is clear as day.

Jerry is a turkey in trouble.

"You can see that the black part of his pupil is cloudy," said Lyndsey Medeiros.

Jerry has cataracts, and his owner, 25 year-old, Lyndsey Medeiros, rescued him from another farm last week, convinced his conditions made him cookable

"It's just something that once in a while, an animal or their story will sort of pull at your heart strings, and he's one of them," said Medeiros.

He needs eye surgery, and Lyndsey, a veterinary assistant, doesn't have enough cash.

She said, "They've quoted me between $2,000 - $2600 dollars."

Lyndsey has been working hard to get the money, even posting on Craigslist to ask for donations.

"I'm not expecting to get a huge amount of money given that he's a turkey and that sorta thing."

She has a lot of supporters but her critics say her turkey doesn't deserve it.

"There's been a lot of people that have said some pretty nasty things. I'm not trying to take food off of people's tables, or money away from causes that would help people."

Surgery would allow Jerry to again see his long-time girlfriend and breed

So far, Medeiros has raised $500 dollars for Jerry's cause.
