When did they start asking for the long form (birth certificate)?

Just heard from the NVC. They want the "long form" of the birth certificate. Is this a new requirement for all countries? The reason I'm asking is because it's going to cost me $200 to get one and my lawyer insists that it's a recent requirement. (Please tell me that she's right; otherwise, I'm going to have to let her go...)

The official docs

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/ty...08.html#docreqs

say

the original documents or certified copies. The certificate must contain the: * Person’s date of birth * Person’s place of birth * Names of both parents, and * Annotation by the appropriate authority indicating that it is an extract from the official records.

It doesn't say anything about "long form" and to add to the confusion, the birth certificate we sent them seems to contain all this info. But the NVC tells me they want the "long form."

Oh and I went to the Honduras Reciprocity Schedule page and it doesn't make anything clearer (it just says the cert. has to be issued by a certain office, which the one we gave is...)

Taken from the website you quoted, this is a standard long form birth certificate. The short form does not contain this information. Short form generally only contains the persons date of birth and place of birth, parents info hospital info etc is only on the original long form birth certificate/ registration.

If your birth certificate seems to be valid, ie: it is from the correct office and it contains all of the information they require - then they may have made a mistake (yes they do make mistakes). If you believe this to be the case you should call NVC and ask to speak to a supervisor and explain this.

The request for the long form birth certificate is not a new rule. USCIS & NVC have always required a birth certificate that shows full details of the parents and when and where you were born.

In the UK the short form only has the persons name, date of birth and place of birth. The long form has all of that plus both parents names and dates of birth, and details of where the birth was registered.

Yes, I think I'm going to do this then.

On the other hand, Honduras does have a "long form" of the birth certificate. I know for a fact because my wife asked. What bothers/confuses me is that, at least for Honduras, both the long form and the short form seem to fulfill the NVC requirements.

Maybe they want the long form because it's harder to get one illegally?

On the other hand, I still don't know if I should ditch the lawyer. She and her secretaries have gotten really nasty and I should probably ditch her just for that...

Yeah, I don't think I would pay someone to be nasty to me - people will do that for free
