Illegal Aliens Moving to Texas in Wake of Tough Oklahoma Law

A Texas-based television station reported last week that experts believe that as many as one million illegal aliens have moved to Texas from neighboring states as those states “toughen up on immigration.” (NBCDFW, November 17, 2009).

The report highlighted the neighboring state of Oklahoma, which in 2007 began implementing enforcement-oriented legislation. This legislation:

Made it a felony for any person to transport, harbor, or shelter an alien in reckless disregard for their illegal immigration status;

Required the state to deny any public benefits to illegal aliens in the country – including driver’s licenses – that the state is not required by federal law to provide;

Gave state police the power to check the immigration status of anyone arrested for driving under the influence or for commission of a felony;

Required state police to detain illegal aliens and transfer them to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); and

Required public employers in Oklahoma to use the E-Verify system to electronically determine the work authorization status of their employees. (HB 1804 Summary; CNN, November 5, 2007; See also FAIR’s Legislative Update, November 5, 2007).

The fact that illegal aliens are leaving Oklahoma for states with more lax approaches to immigration enforcement reaffirms the enforcement strategy that FAIR has advocated on the national level for years: attrition through enforcement

...and here I thought it would be the other way around....Texas hasn't made it a felony yet?!?!?!? :wow:

About time a state got it.

At a time when 10.2% of Americans are flat out unemployed, around 18% are underemployed and an economy which is only going to worsen, ensuring that only those here legally get to use public services and get one of few jobs available is a must.

Hiring an illegal alien in this economy should be a felony.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I can't wait for the first VJ couple to report here on VJ, their nightmare ordeal as the USC gets arrested because their foreign spouse is Out of Status, perhaps simply waiting for USCIS. Try proving your legal status after your K-1 Visa has expired and you haven't been approved for your Green Card.

Congratulations, all you anti-immigration zealots. This will all come back to bite you on your #######.

I see what it is about you guys. It's the same deal with the criminal system. You would rather have murders walk free than one person have their 'rights' violated. Totally different mentality to that of most other first world countries. Then again, who is winning the awards for human developed and quality of life. If mockery from those abroad does not work, then I am sure International recognition for whose and which approach is better should tell you something.

Correction. What has bitten this country in the azz is the millions of illegal aliens taking up jobs and preventing supply and demand from increasing wages and quality of life. It has directly affecting guys like yourself. E.G. Your property price, your state being severely in the red, and Californian schools being ranked as one of the poorest performing in the entire country.

Time to get over the Kumbaya movement and smell the coffee. Every other Internationally recognized first world country see to get it.

The difficulty in establishing just laws is to make sure that a law doesn't hinder another person's liberty as a consequence.

If you can only imagine the numbers of K Visas where the foreign spouses are in legal limbo for periods of time - what kind of potential legal trouble and personal anguish that will cause them and their families. There are smarter ways to deal with the issues of illegal immigration in this country, but this is Draconian and unAmerican.

You have status but for a period of time many (not all) K1's have nothing to prove it. I know my wife was in that state for about a week.

There's a lot to fix with our immigration laws before we go too gung-ho on people lacking documentation.

anti-illegal immigration. But why would you be honest? Honesty goes against the PC doctrine.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

k1 visa holders cannot work anyway without a work permit.

sorry to disappoint you.

but, my wife was 'out of status' in Oklahoma for a few weeks after we got married. we went to DMV w/ her expired visa, Philippine passport, copy of marriage licence, copy of the paperwork from the SS office to change her SS# to her married name, & a print out from the USCIS website showing no set time limit to adjust status...its just states to adjust status ASAP.......guess what. she was legal & out the door w/ a 4 year Oklahoma ID in her married name in 20 minutes. & that included the phone call to the director to make sure it was within the law & ok for them to issue the ID.

next illegal immigration cheerleader step right up.

And my wife had nothing for about a week. Experiences vary. To me, the K1 system has a hole in it that needs filling.
