So what exactly does the NVC do once it receives your approved I-129f? From what I've read on the USCIS and State Dept websites, it looks like petition gets forwarded to the appropriate embassy without any processing by the NVC. Seems like an unnecessary step that takes up more precious time.

Correct. Security/name checks are done at all stages of this process. As with the service centers, if there is a name hit or security issue this will add time to the NVC process. Generally though when there is no name hit or security issues (country or job specific eg) then the NVC process is only a short pit stop before being forwarded to the consulate post.

Usually, NVC assigns a case number and forward it to the Embassy. But, if there is a name hit, then NVC does a security check before forwarding it to the embassy.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview
