I'm just wondering how most the people on here met their lovers initially...over the internet or in person? I ask because I wonder the number of couples the consulate deals with that met over the internet as oppossed to meeting in person initially. I met mine on a dating site and then we met in person. It makes me wonder at times if the consulate sees couples that meet online at first as more of a red flag than not. I don't see why they would, granted that I'd expect most of them met online.

We met via our blogs. The CO in London said his sister met her husband online and they've been married for 10 years. He had no issues with us meeting online. It's quite common these days.

We met online early 2007 at hotornot.com  and I was just interested in meeting friends from other countries to learn more about different cultures. I was actually dating someone at the time and my now fiance (Akhlaq) was just my friend then but he always questioned my bf at the time. He always said "there is something 'fishy' about him & I don't think he's being honest but I want you to be happy". I would have never guessed that Akhlaq was right and that horrible man would go on to break my heart. Me and Akhlaq just became closer talking all the time (voice chat, cam etc.) but I would have never give him a 2nd thought to be 'serious' because 1. I had almost given up on meeting a true love & 2. I thought he was tooooooo young! (he's 12 years younger!! but you would NEVER know it; he acts like he's 49) :jest: I think its hilarious NOW because we were just meant to be. After I stopped fighting the inevitable fast forward to present  I couldn't imagine life without each other. I adore him with ALL my heart & God blessed us to bring us together. I just hope that the embassy sees & thinks the same!!

Yup, gaming is how we met. It's very frustrating that people automatically assume if you met online, you must have been out looking. We get comments to that effect often and it irks me to the core.

That, and 'so erm, how do you guys... you know.... cope with being apart so much with...ahhhh....you know... intimacy?' MYOFB! lol

LMAO!!! What I find funny is that me and my guy are complete opposites on all the major stuff (religion, politics, etc) yet the one thing that stops people when I talk about him is that we met on the internet. Apparently they think he's a serial killer once that comes up. :P

Met my hubby on the internet, but not on a dating website....a social website and he was a friend of a friend.... I agree with the comment above...people seem to think meeting someone on the internet and falling in love is equal to contracting the plague. LOL

Met my fiance on Second Life. Neither of us were looking for anyone else. But we found each other and have now been together for 2.5 yrs.

-Blu-

So did we and same thing - sure didn't sign up to meet anyone! How do people inworld react to you being a RL couple and lasting so long? Are you still inworld much, or have you moved on from SL now? There's just something about being able to log in when you need a cuddle and see your avies give each other a hug. lol...

We actually started a group on SL called Crossing Borders for people doing the same thing we are...taking SL relationships to RL. Haven't been inworld a lot lately because my VERY slow internet connection makes doing anything almost impossible. A few of the people we have known over the yrs there are coming to our wedding in Feb. We may put out blue and pink balls on the dance floor for them, at the reception. LOL.

LOL, that would be awesome and what a hilarious 'in' joke! I'll look up the group next time I'm inworld

Actually the first time we met in person, he had brought a pink and blue styrofoam ball with him...made me crack up laughing.

-Blu- ( :innocent::devil: )

I am laughing here because I met my fiance in SL as well. Neither of us looking for a relationship at all as we had both just left marriages prior to meeting. We rarely go into SL at all now due to being on webcam most of the time.

I love the pink & blue 'dance' balls for your reception, that would be quite funny to see.

It may seem unconventional to meet online no matter where you meet or how but the way I view it, without the internet I wouldnt have met the man I have waited for my whole life.

My fiancee and I met on FilipinaHeart. Before FilipinaHeart I had an InternationalCupid page that's owned by the same company. I got too many Russian scammers messaging me so I switched to something more specific. I'm glad I chose FilipinaHeart! :D

We met almost 22 years ago at a youth hostel in Sydney, Australia in our early 20s. Had a vacation romance then went our separate ways and lived our separate lives in our respective countries. Wrote snail mails letters for awhile. Fast forward to last year when I Googled him after having dinner with my friend I went to Australia with (she happened to bring the pictures which triggered so many memories of my Finn Man!). I had no clue where he was, if he was married, etc...lucky for me I found him on Google and he was single! I visited him one month later and we married in July! Now we're older and wiser...ha! His interview is in three weeks...

Our timeline:

2/88: We met in Sydney, Australia at a youth hostel! He's Finnish, I'm American-both were in our early 20s at the time and fresh out of college (so couldn't afford to visit each other's countries after that!). We had a three-day romance, then went our separate ways. He actually was going to Sydney a week later, but decided at the last minute to cut his trip short in another country and go early. Wow.

1988-1998: Wrote "snail mail" letters/sent Xmas cards, but lived our separate lives. I married someone else, divorced in 2006...he lived with someone for years and then that ended.

10/08: Because of a series of random life events, I Googled my Finn Man and found him (but no link to his email, and the website his name was on was in Estonian so I couldn't even read it!). It took me two weeks to find a link to someone else, who forwarded my email to him (we were both single at the time thankfully!!!!). The email went to his spam folder but he happened to check it that day and responded back to me immediately! This was after 10 years of no contact and almost 21 years of not seeing each other after we first met.

11/08-5/09: We traveled back and forth to visit each other. Love at first (second?) sight!

7/09: Married in Helsinki, Finland...after meeting randomly 21 1/2 years ago and finding each other again!!!!!

8/13/09: I-130 sent!!!!!!!!!

Rest is on my timeline!

My fiance and I met in SL too. I landed next to him at Bogart's and we danced and we became friends....lol Soon that friendship turned into so much more and here we are 19 months later, engaged, and we almost have his visa, and oh yea, we have a beautiful son that was born on October 7, 2009. If it wasn't for SL I really feel like I would not have met the one true love of my life and I wouldn't have our beautiful son. We occasionally go into SL to give us something to do while we are waiting for the visa but will be coming out permanetly once he gets here.

That, and 'so erm, how do you guys... you know.... cope with being apart so much with...ahhhh....you know... intimacy?' MYOFB! lol

People have the strangest ideas sometimes. You "were out looking"? And since when is that bad? There are personal ads everywhere, and have been for years and what do you think people in bars, singles clubs and even church social groups are doing? #######?

Oh well, I never concerned my self with ignorance. I wasn't out looking, not that I care if someone is or was, but what are the odds of findsing anyone that way? Who expects (or would expect you) to meet their SO by having them fall from the sky and land on your head? Which is close to what happened to me.

LOL - Tell me about it. I think what it boils down to is most relationships start when you meet someone at work, through friends, in school. You don't get up every morning and go into work, consciously cruising every floor of your office block for someone who catches your eye.

Where people hear that you met online, they automatically assume that you made a conscious decision to log onto a dating website and 'went looking'. There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing that but it's the assumption that irks me. We were both in our late 20s when we met and it is still unusual for people in that age group to use dating sites. The assumption then leads to the (wrong) conclusion that if you can't find someone in conventional ways, there must be something wrong with you. I'm talking about peers within a specific age group, mind you.

Those of us who met our SOs in SL (Second Life) are also up against the barrage of very negative press attention that it attracted about 18 months ago, labelling it as nothing more than some sordid virtual cybering site. Therefore, anyone who isn't into SL but has heard about it through the media often wrongly assumes that you have some obscure sexual kink! lol Even if you did, it's none of their business but if you met your SO conventionally, then nobody in your immediate entourage is going to suspect that you have a kink.

So in short, it's about coming up against preconceptions that unfairly paint you in a less than attractive light....

Like you, I couldn't get a monkeys about what people think about us and how we met. But it does irk me when they assume the worst....

LOL I agree totally about the SL reference! After a lot of negative press people do assume that you must have kinks of all varieties to have been in SL! I always liken it to The Sims on some serious steroids!

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter how you met your SO, as long as you are happy who bloody well cares!
