F-1 Student Visa Interview!!!

HI all!

My fiance just received his I-20 and acceptance letter from an American University in California. I am American and he is Ivorian. We are both excited yet a little nervous. Has anyone else been through the interview process preferably from Sub-Saharan Africa. Any ideas, comments, or suggestions are welcomed!

I know its tricky... I am a co-sponser along with his mother. However, we want to get our master's before we even start talking about wedding plans....

We have proof that he has been pursuing his studies in this certain degree longer then we have been together, could that be a plus?

He is also applying to internships in other countries of special interests, could that help his case too?

He needs to tell the truth, if he is asked if he is engaged, then he must answer yes. If they ask what his relationships to the co-sponsors are, then he must answer honestly.

Bring all the proof you have of his pursuing his education and why an American university, specifically the one he got accepted to, is the best choice for HIM (not your relationship) focus on the advantages of the program, the professors qualifications, what this university offers over the others he's applied for.

It's very tricky, as an F1 visa is for non-immigrants - people who don't intend to stay on in the US but are planning to return, it's actually what you sign for... although life happens, as with my case, I never did intend to stay on, until I met my husband, so life happens and things change. But, to get the F1 visa he kind of have to ensure them that he does not intend to immigrate, being engaged to a USC is proof for them that he will want to stay on I guess... why not if he is your fiance.. have him enter on a fiance visa? if you guys don't get married within 90 days does that mean he has to return or can he adjust status from fiance visa to F1? I actually don't have the answer to that, but maybe that's the wiser and more honest route to persue.

The chance of him being denied F-1 is about 99%. Fiance means you guys are getting married. He can not possibly tell the interviewer any thing different. The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa so it will be close to impossible to tell the officer during interview that you guys will not get married once he gets here. It is good that he has other proof that he had plans to study here before you got engaged but the day you said YES... changed everything. Why don't you just apply for a k-1 visa since you are already engaged and not have to worry about anything. I don't mean to be negative but the minute he mentions that his fiance is in the U.S. will be the end of the interview. He qualifys for a k-1 more than F-1 IMHO
