The silence by the Conservatives that argue here in OT is DEAFENING! Perhaps they don't see the absurdity in their arguing style?

It's not like all conservatives argue like that, is it? But I'm also waiting for certain people to come to this thread and tell us that what we're seeing is just another proof for the Democrats' hate of America. ;)

I moderate a political weblog on another forum and honestly, a great majority who consider themselves Conservative don't like to argue - it's contradictory to their ideology. Right is right and that's that - sort of nonsense. However, when you corner most people, they will show that they aren't ideologues - they're political views are more a mixed bag which is comforting to know. The Republican Party as of late (15 years or so), have hardlined ideologically and we now have this polarity that has divided this country. If you disagree with them, you're a treehugging, hippie, granola eating, communist liberal. To some that might just be in jest, but for many hardliners they really believe in this one dimensionality - you're with us or against us. As an American, I find that frightening. I find it scary that we can't even engage in meaningful dialogue where both sides become a little more enlightened. I'm not sure where to begin, but my inkling is that as long as public schools are shunned, and reading literature besides the Bible is considered 'secular morality' (Goldie Locks and the Three Bears), our future generations will be more and more divided along such ideological lines. It's ironic that the Religious Right can't see the parallel between themselves and religious extremists in the rest of the world.

PS It's really funny to see someone make these comments who is from Laguna Beach. What's the median house price their again?? But apparently like every other well off liberal, you are for the poor people and against corporations... That is why Liberals want Mexicans to do the work they won't do... (aka Liberals are "like" too good for those jobs)..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Before any liberal attacks me for it, I meant "there" and not "their"...

I know what you mean about so-called conservative in general, and those are the ones who carpet the web with their dogmatic nonsense. I do think, however, that generalizations are not the way to go because there are still some who have enough common sense and think for themselves. And some of these also post on VJ.

Interesting what you say about your blog experience though.

How does where I live have anything to do with my comments about Conservatives? Being wealthy (which I am not) does not mean one can't be politically liberal. You're just proving my point that Conservatives see things in absolutes - it's either this or that. Reality never quite works that way. In fact, I'd bet that you have some views that are by definition NOT Conservative at all. Stop buying into the notion that one is either Conservative or Liberal and you'll begin to see that most American have the same core ideals. That my brother would go a long way in changing the way we argue with each other.

As for what defines being a liberal, here's a speech on just that by JFK back in 1960: (see if you actually share in these ideals - you may be surprised)

http://www.cjnetworks.com/~cubsfan/whatis.html

"I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind. I do not believe in a superstate. I see no magic in tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale federal bureaucracies in this administration as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. But I believe in a government which acts, which exercises its full powers and full responsibilities. Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it. And this requires not only great ends but that we propose concrete means of achieving them."
