help! quick I-134 co-sponsor question..

Hi all!!

My dad will be the co-sponsor for my fiancee in England. I see other co-sponsors are including copies of their birth certificate or passport with the I-134. (correct?)

My dad has no passport, and was not born in the US. Does he need to include a copy of his Certificate of Naturalization??

(He is reluctant to do this, claiming nowhere does it ask him to include it and he says writing his certificate # on the I-134 should be sufficient)

He does not want to include his birth certificate from Germany either.

Please provide any feedback that you can as soon as possible, because we want to send our stuff to England this week!

He also wants to black-out his social security # on forms he includes like his tax return, etc..

The I-134 is like a mini version of the I-864 Affidavit of Support that you will use for Adjustment of Status. Many people read the instructions to the I-864 for a better idea of what is generally expected in completing and affidavit of support. It goes into documentation, household size, etc better. So if you will download the I-864 from USCIS.gov, page 6, section 19 will discuss the Citizenship/Residency of your joint sponsor.

A joint sponsor can be any U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident who is at least 18 years old, domiciled in the United States, or its territories or possessions, and willing to be held jointly liable with the petitioner for the support of the intending immigrant.

On either of the Affidavit of Support forms, there is the first section where the person filling it out states how they qualify to be a sponsor...birth in the US, naturalizaton, legal permanent resident....

You are correct that the I-134 does not specifically say to send a copy of the naturalization certificate and the number filled in should be okay. In a few months for AOS, it is expected that your joint sponsor provide a photocopy of what document shows they are a US citizen or legally residing there. Your father's foreign born birth certificate does not show US citizenship or naturalization, so is not appropriate for this application.

Sure, I think it would be fine for him to black out his SSN. And if he's uncomfortable showing his info to your fiance or even you, he can seal it in an envelope and mark it "to be opened only by consulate offical" or something like that.

I would go down the route of sealing it for confidentiality, not blacking out. Unless his name is Engelbert Humperdinck or something extraordinarily unique, the SSN is a clear identifying factor that states that the Joe Bloggs signing the I-134 is the same Joe Bloggs named on the tax returns.

I understand his wanting to maintain some level of privacy where his child and future in law is concerned, but honestly, keeping information confidential from the US government rather defeats the object of the exercise...

Does he appreciate that the AOS sponsorship will act as a legal contract between him and the US government?

Also make sure that the part that says 'I intend' is ticked with something along the lines of 'helping with day to day costs of living/ accommodation/ room and board (or whatever is relevant) until the beneficiary has adjusted status and secured legal employment'. The London USEM want to see I intend ticked and have issued 221(g)s for this to be corrected before issuing a visa.
