Downloading Music. Help!!

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I just bought a Apple 8 GB nano Ipod for my daughter and would like to know where I can get music online to download into it.

I see - that makes a difference.

There are many MP3/Music (and video) sites out there - the subscription-based sites (or pay/per sites) I wouldn't worry about getting viruses or malicious software from - it is the file-sharing (P2P/Bit Torrent) sites that are questionable (legally and content) and best avoided. (Yes, it's great to get music for free but there are risks and life lessons best avoided, especially not something to expose a child/young-person to.)

Check out some of the top-tier sites have to offer and give one a limited try - see how it works for her and for your wallet. If its a subscription site - make sure they have the library that you'd like to explore - some may focus on one genre and not so much on others so you want to make sure you get the most of the monthly fee.

Consumer Research has a rating for the subscription/pay sites found (there are undoubtedly other reviews out there) : http://www.consumersearch.com/music-downloads

And I'm sure there are others giving reviews. I've used Itues and Amazon (and a few others) with no problems (and Napster before the free-ride ended).

Is it even legal to put CDs on your iPod. I do it. But, wondering if that's considered copying the damn things too.

Yes it is, as long as you didn't have to break any copy protection scheme to do that. But it is a little bit of a grey area under the law and if the industry gets it way, you will pay for every format that you want music in.

I didn't realize there were so many sites to download music. Makes me dizzy trying to find what I like. Mainly Oldies but goodies and older country.

I have no viruses to date. Sorry.

Did you have any teenage kids that grew up with computers? Really hell being a parent today, if they download and they are under 18, you as a parent are liable. Not only that but porn, especially child porn, they let all this ####### be put on the web but nail you if you download it. Not you, but your kids, big brother is watching. Even have to tell your kids, not to use that b o m b word on the web, kids have gotten arrested for that.

Also a law where you have to send your kids to high school, those drug free signs are 100% BS, another severe burden on a parent.

Ripping music, videos to CDs/DVD from another CD/DVD you own for your own personal use is considered illegal by the Millineum (spelled it wrong) Copyright Act.

Amen to that....I used to think my daughter was going to make me go prematurely grey until my son became a teenager!(There is 12 years between then) You really have to be on top of everything with him. I've learned about half truths lately!

You mean I am breaking the law if I copy a CD that I purchased to use in my vehicle? I really don't want to leave a CD in my car that I paid 16 bucks for that is subject to warpage with interior temperatures that can reach 180*F, already had to pitch some copies. Then they make it so easy to copy a CD, used to record these over to a cassette that would take 90 minutes, can do that now in minutes with all kinds of software available. Shouldn't they be going after MS with Windows Media for one? They also make it very easy to make an MP3.

Never even tried to copy a DVD, have yet to find something worth copying or even to sit through for that matter, thank God, my DVD player has a fast forward button. But that doesn't work with all the threats you have to go through when you first insert the disk. Cable company says I can copy movies they show, even trying to get me to rent a digital recorder, suppose the reason for the law is so that you can get a nice HD copy rather than trying to screw around with macrovision on a standard DVD with much poor quality.

Wife switched on American Music Awards last night, must be trying to protect these weirdos that essentially all sound alike. Told my wife if I had to pick one word to described these acts, would be outrageous, the more outrageous the act, the more popular. Sure wouldn't want to copy any of the #######, but could off my TV set as it is broadcasted.

legalsounds.com - I've been using it for years. 9 cents a track (that's 10 times cheaper than itunes)

EDIT: it's legalsounds.com. My initial post had a typo.
