Career sacrifices sometimes need to be made for the better of the family life, but women shouldn't bear that burden alone. There are plenty of couples where the man stays at home. If you're fortunate enough to have a career that allows you to be able to work at home (writer, artist) then it shouldn't even be a question of who should stay at home, if necessary. On the flip side, the bread winners should also be thinking if their current job is the right job to have if it means they are away from their family too much. Family should be a priority for both spouses, in whatever capacities they can contribute...roles should be fluid.

Hey steven, you dropped your european shoulder bag.

Probably because it doesn't match his shoes.

Exactly. Who accessorizes Italian loafers with a French shoulder bag? Fashion faux pas a la mode.

I figured you'd be wearing high heels and stockings.

Oh that's right! You're not from the Ukraine.

Eddie Izzard wears them.

But Brits will wear anything.

Well, personally I think it is a shame what old people and misogynists believe. If you want to go backwards rather than forwards and turn back the clock on women's lib then move to Iran. They had the same idea and yeah, it hasn't worked out so well for them. I'm so happy that I'm an independent woman and can take care of myself. I married the man I did because I wanted to, not because I needed to. That is how he knows I love him. And why the hell should anyone care what someone buys with their own damn money. Whoever posted that ad on Craig's List needs some serious therapy not to mention an education if he thinks feminism is responsible for people buying cell phones and hiring someone else to mow their lawn. There are quite a few American men I am so happy to not be married to. Some people just need to get a life.

reminds me of when i was reading US based personal ads where so many women said "I'm an independent woman" and all I could think was 1) this is a warning! and 2) you mean there are dependent women out there and 3) are those dependent women the enemy and 4) are you superior to the dependent woman? i also wondered why it is so important to state one's character in such a way.

i started reading ads written by men out of curiosity looking for the man that said "I'm an independent man," but darn, couldn't find one guy that said he was independent.

seems a lot of women are at odds with each other.

no offense to either kind of woman. just stating what went through my mind.

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.

I, for one, am VERY happy you are an independent woman. There is no need to move to Iran. we can import traditional women and ignore all that BS

I totally get annoyed when I read the personals (out of curiousity) that the women seeking man, they're independent, not looking for a man to change their way of life and is happy with how I am...etc...

Good luck lady!

I hate woman who totally ignores what a man wants. I also hate the man who totally ignores what a woman wants. Therefore, it is necessary to make sacrifices for each other. Those personal ads lacks that I think because everyone wants their own way instead of commitment. To each their own.

You say that like women are a commodity.

 We can set up a futures market.

You know, define some standard commodity contracts like:

* Ukrainian 28 year old brunette, 5'6", 36-26-36 measurements. Or - Filipina 22 year old 5'2" B cup.

* Define standard quarterly delivery months - Mar, June, Sep, Dec.

* Recognized ports of delivery: LAX, ORD, JFK.

Products that differ from the standard contract definitions and/or delivery locations would be priced with offsetting credit/debit adjustments.

For example, a 35 year Ukrainian is deducted 10% from standard contract due to age, or a 26 year old French woman is treated at par because the positive gain from her younger age is offset by her western European (as opposed to more highly desired eastern European) origin. Delivery at Burlington VT obviously incurs additional shipping/warehousing charges as compared to delivery at NYC.

It's all quite similar to how the energy or grains commodity markets work, really. A barrel of North Sea brent crude PO NYC vs. light sweet Texas PO Houston TX.

The market would have active participants interested in procuring the physical product for delivery -- you know, your basic misogynistic barbarians like Gary. However it also opens up the potential for an active speculator market, where you could - for example - go long on a forward delivery for a hot 26 year old Japanese Geisha for Mar2010 delivery and simultaneously short the Sep2010 Ukrainian supermodel, on the theory that Asians are forecast to be in vogue next season while statuesque blondes are losing favor in the seasonal swing of things. Could be a very profitable trade!

Commoditizing women would appear to have a great and lucrative future!
