That is what happened when womans lib took hold....but the government used that movement and has now got the people believing that 2 incomes are necessary. People need to figure out again that a 1 car family can manage, dishwashers are a luxery, not a necessity, cell phones are an unnecessary expense. you can cut your own grass and shovel your own snow and take the kids with to drive dad to work when you need the car. Change your own oil and wash your own car cook your own meals from scratch and all the excercise from doing your own "chores" will save you money on the gym....This society is so mixed up that it is sad. It's a shame what you young people believe. You have convenience(want) and necessity(need) all mixed up. think about it. What would happen if you didn't pay for all those extras on your phone, call waiting, 3-way, voice mail, etc. well, if people got a busy signal, they would call back, if they leave a message on your machine, you could push a button and listen to it while you drink your coffee, and there would be no more interruptions while you are in a conversation with someone on the phone and RUDELY ask them to hold on while you take the other (more important) call. What a slap in the face

so what do you think?

Living in any society is about change and adaptation. It is understandably that some things are not necessary, example the dishwasher. However, as society is increasingly becoming more sophisticated socially, some stuff that we may not take for granted today will be taken for granted tomorrow.

Someone in the 80s says, we don't need to rely on computers. Computers are just a waste of money. But, without computer today means database systems that we rely on (ex. SS Numbers were all placed into a central computerize database), schedules, flight controllers, etc...would not exist today. These things made everything sustainable as more people produce offsprings.

We're a two-income family but operate solely on a single income (mine). With all due respect to the author of this piece, we have 2 cars, a dishwasher, cell phones and pay an HOA to do our landscaping and show snoveling. We also get our car serviced by professionals, order a lot of delivery, have gym memberships and have a landline with all those features. It's all very possible on a single income. Why? Because there's nothing special or extravagent about any of it. It's normal.

I think we have all that stuff (no dishwasher yet, Alla is working on that) and only ONE income. And I agree with the phone #######. I do not pay for any of that. Why should I pay money to make it easier for YOU to disturb ME? I am not a women's lib kinda guy, Alla thinks feminism is stockings and high heels, doesn't WANT to work, (it is a man's responsibility) and wants to go to school and care for her family (because she has all that modern stuff now she can spend less time for housework and go to school) and I definitely think one person working in a family is better and yes...better to sacrifice the bling for a mother around.

Anyone is free to disagree with me and I do not give a **! It is especially easier now that, if you are one of those feminist women-are-the-same-as-men types...we American men who make enough to afford all the good stuff on one income do not need to put up with your #######. We can get foreign traditional women who want to care for their husband and children and think it is really more important than work. And, of course you need us like...what is it?..."A fish needs a bicycle" Sounds mutually agreeable to me. Be happy. I am.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!

And you can go without some of that stuff if you must to make ends meet. We haven't had a land line since we moved to this house we bought two years ago. The neighborhood is on a city street - no HOA required. The yard is tiny so Wes cuts it. Likewise the amount of concrete is so minimal it can be shoveled in ten minutes.

Now - my dishwasher is starting to act up. THAT could be a problem...........

Well, personally I think it is a shame what old people and misogynists believe. If you want to go backwards rather than forwards and turn back the clock on women's lib then move to Iran. They had the same idea and yeah, it hasn't worked out so well for them. I'm so happy that I'm an independent woman and can take care of myself. I married the man I did because I wanted to, not because I needed to. That is how he knows I love him. And why the hell should anyone care what someone buys with their own damn money. Whoever posted that ad on Craig's List needs some serious therapy not to mention an education if he thinks feminism is responsible for people buying cell phones and hiring someone else to mow their lawn. There are quite a few American men I am so happy to not be married to. Some people just need to get a life.

I've never thought I was the same as a man. I've always thought that men and women compliment each other both at home and in the workplace. Different mental and physical wiring with mutually compatible skill sets and intellects. Nature didn't make us the way we are without reason.

I don't work to have 'bling'. I work because I am capable and too damn good to not be out there helping other people. I work because in this area the wages are low and it takes two incomes to lead a modest life. I work because my ex-husband forced me out of my traditional role of mother and housewife because his 90K per year income wasn't enough money to pay for all his 'bling'.

Eventually I decided that I could be miserable working and living with a man who valued all his 'good stuff' more than me - or I could be happy living with a man who loved me enough to work side-by-side with me to build a modest life that made us both blissfully content. He just happened to be foreign-born. I didn't go 'get' him off the rack like going to the car lot and buying another car.

There are people out there (male and female alike) who don't really appreciate the uniqueness of their spouse for who they are, rather than just what they bring to 'me'. In a household where a man and woman work together (both inside and outside the home) for their mutual benefit, you'll usually find neither of them are worried about 'traditional roles'. They're too busy trying to make each other happy and prosperous - no matter what it takes.

You know what. My wife works, and if I slack off by refusing to do household chores when she cooks for me to eat I better worship the belt. I might get nightmares after she take away my livelihood. Heck, I cower in the corner when she is mad. I don't know what is up with woman. Man, why are they so scary.

Well, I'm just exaggerating, but I try not to have my wife so stressed out. Yes, I never want to get her mad. If I want to buy a 80 dollar video game, I better be prepared to give her 160 dollars.

Career sacrifices sometimes need to be made for the better of the family life, but women shouldn't bear that burden alone. There are plenty of couples where the man stays at home. If you're fortunate enough to have a career that allows you to be able to work at home (writer, artist) then it shouldn't even be a question of who should stay at home, if necessary. On the flip side, the bread winners should also be thinking if their current job is the right job to have if it means they are away from their family too much. Family should be a priority for both spouses, in whatever capacities they can contribute...roles should be fluid.

I'd have something witty to say if my wife wasn't yelling for me to go iron her blouse.

I am the one who does the dishes in the house. I'm the dishwasher, trash man, driver, money maker. But, hey I love my wife. She's nice.
