Hi, on the AOS I-485, etc. forms, on the place for my wife's name, does she use her maiden name, or her new last name (mine)?

She does not yet have a SS number because when we went 4 weeks ago they said she was not in their system yet, so what name should she use on these AOS forms? Thanks for any info.

Actually i just looked at it and saw (Family Name), so i'm sure it's asking for her maiden name.

Now i'm wondering about where the I-485 asks, "This form is submitted in connection with an application for"

Naturalization?

Status of Permanent Resident?

Other?

She's over here on a K1 Fiancee visa....so which one do we check???

And what is the "Alien File Number"???

Your wife can use either her maiden name or married name for these forms. I used my married name. She should just put her married name if that is the name she is now using. I did a cover letter for the package and wrote my married name on it with my A#, then wrote my maiden name in parenthesis. Also, on the I-485 form in Part 3, you have to write the name written on the arrival-departure record, which will be her maiden name anyway.

For your second query, your wife should check the box 'status as permanent resident' since she is applying to adjust her status from K1 to permanent resident.

Lastly, the File Number is the same as the A#, which is the number written on the K1 visa (the number beginning with A).

Good luck!

If you and your wife want to carry her maiden name in her greencard then she can fill the form in her maiden name, or she can use her married in filing AOS to have her married name in greencard.

I believe, my answer before was "other" the wrote down AOS (adjustment of status)

You can find her "alien file number" same as "alien register number" at the back of her I-94 or at the

notice of action (petition approval) you received from the USCIS at the box of "beneficiary" under her name was A0XXXXXXXX

She can use hers or your family name but once she decides what to use, the rest of her documents must be carrying the family name she chose.. I used my husband's family name because it's more accepted in the Philippines and it feels good to be using it. Proud to be his wife.

Status of Permanent Resident?

About the ss number, actually some states allow k1-visa holders to apply already days after they arrived here in the US. I got mine before AOS application. But reading here in VJ, it seems that not all state have the same policies. Just write "NONE" like what others did.

THe Alien number is in her passport where the visa is.

Goodluck guys.
