Hi Everyone,

Ok, this may be a bit off topic, but thinking ahead...

I just renewed my Canadian passport, and that is valid from 2009-2014 (5 yrs only)

I will apply for my US passport card soon, which will be valid from 2009-2019 or 2010-2020...(10 yrs)

I will apply for my NYS Enhanced Driver's License soon, which will the EDL part will be valid from 2009-2017 (8 yrs)

So between 2009/2010 to 2014, I will be travelling by land to Canada with all three documents, as a dual citizen of both countries...

But after 2014, my Canadian passport will expire..

So when my Canadian passport expires in 2014...should I renew it?

Or just let it be, and just travel with my US documents to save on costs and time for renewal of a Canadian passport?

I don't have a Canadian birth certificate...so that's not an option either..

I only have a very outdated Canadian Citizenship card, and my expired Canadian Passport after 2014...

Can I use my outdated card and expired passport to prove my Canadian citizenship?

Can I just travel with an expired Canadian passport and an valid American passport card and EDL, between Canada and the USA after 2014?

Will I have problems travelling after 2014 like this?

Any thoughts, ideas suggestions, appreciated, etc. too. Thanks.

Throw in a kilt and you have the whole ensemble!

Although they will probably toss you out on your ear at the swearing in ceremony.

And Ant, i'm sure they would probably let you in with an American Passport and a Canadian citizenship certificate - but hey, it's 5 years away, they may well change everything up by then and we will all have a microchip behind our left ear.

I found this interesting little tidbit, which made me think of those that consider getting their U.S. citizenship then hauling their SO over the border to get Canadian citizenship:

A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth. U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship

Trailmix-Thanks for your reply. Hope that is the case, that they will let me through after 2014..with an American Passport Card, Outdated Canadian Citizenship Card, and Expired Canadian Passport....lol....At least I can get back home to the USA though..they can't kick me out of here as of tomorrow...I'm here to stay in the USA!

 Good idea about the microchip though....Think the USA will come out with that one first before Canada does! (or maybe they already have..lol..they already have fingerprints on green cards..so microchips don't seem so long away..)

I'm just hoping that on the Canadian side they offer 10 yr passports (instead of 5yr ones..what a rip-off!) and a low-cost passport card option (lol..a $45 card is better than a $100 book, and a card is more convenient too), like they do here in the USA, and that they get rid of the darn guarrantor thing for getting a Canadian passport (lol..I can't afford another 'bribe' for one)....That's my wish for PassportCanada before 2014....lol...wishful thinking.. :star:

I renewed my Cdn passport earlier this year, was a very easy process. Bit more difficult if ya let it expire though

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Flames-Difficult, how so? Lol..I can't renew my Canadian passport if it is still valid for 4+ out of 5 years, as I just renewed it this year! Did you need a guarrantor when you renewed your passport? How long should I wait to renew it if I do renew it? At the 5 year mark? At the 4.5 year mark? Earlier? Later? At all?

I fully intend to come back for another day next year and see the other half of the country!

I still have 80 canadian dollars to spend from my last trip. I'm sorry if me keeping all that money abroad is screwing up your economy. It must be a strain to do without that much. I promise to spend it as soon as I can!

You don't need a guarantor anymore (professional). Just someone who has known you for 2+ years that isn't a family member.

I was amazed to see that you have the same old lady on your notes as we have on ours. She must be really important. Who is she?

I used to tell my grandmother that she looked exactly like the queen.
